Looking at other comments entered before upgade (upgrade from 4.3.7.2) more recent ones were blank (only an empty box appeared)and other older ones appeared as normal.
Hi @Lani, thanks for reporting. Not reproducible. Win10x64 Version: 4.4.5.2 Build Id: a22f674fd25a3b6f45bdebf25400ed2adff0ff99 Does it happen with a specific file or even with a file from scratch? Please try resetting the user profile, sometimes solves strange issues. https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile

Using an Intel PC desktop with win > 10x64 and Libera 4.2.6.3 the same file comments display correctly and can > make new comment and delete it. Go back it's not an issue, but I thinks you need uninstall the last version to downgrade. There is a program to install several version in parallel: http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/si-gui/ Being the issue only with an specific file, please could you verify if clearing all data in that, the issue remains?, if so could you please then attach the cleared file, there is not other way to verify the issue.
Please @Lani, if you can, answer in bugzilla no by email.
Cleared all contents from file and problem still the same - can't create a cell comment. I'll attach the cleared file.
Created attachment 118442 [details] Libera calc file that is content have been cleared, can't create cell comments
(UI actually means User Interface.)
The insertion happens but with a so low font size that it's near to invisible, choose a high zoom scale and you can see it. Seems the issue is the font inserting the comment, "MS Sans Serif" what is the font for Default style, used when a comment is inserted, but such font it's not installed or doesn't exist, at least in my Win10, the font that exist is "Microsoft Sans Serif". Changing the font for Default Style, and add a new comment, it's visible now. Please do you know how the file was created, with LibreOffice, other application?
The original file was a MS office 2003 spreadsheet that was converted to Libera calc file in 2012 - don't know what version was being used at that time. The font used in the MS office file was MS sans serif 8. As stated in comment 3, I have a Win 10 desktop with Libera Office 4.2.6.3 which displays all the comments in the file. In 4.2.6.3 it shows the font as MS Sans Serif 8, but the font list does not include MS Sans Serif. The list does have MS Reference Sans Serif which is not in the 5.0.1.2 list. In 5.0.1.2 I noticed the blank comments are MS Sans Serif 8 and the readable comments are Tahoma 8. I can't edit the blank comment and change the their font size or change their font. I can delete the comment and insert a new comment, and by changing the font to arial (a listed font) before typing, then a comment can be typed and displayed. I see this as my work around - using 4.2.6.3 to recover the information in the blank comments and then re-inserting them in 5.0.1.2 in a different font. As stated in comment 3 the comments displayed correctly in 4.3.7.2 and the MS Sans Serif comments displayed as blanks after updating to 4.4.5.2 and 5.0.1.2.
I forgot to mention I zoom to 400% and the comment was still blank.
I think the way is: - For new comments, first select for Default Style an existent Font. - For the existents comments, please try editing the comment, [home][ctrl+shift+end] and select other font.
Yes highlighting the comments (home, ctrl shift end) and then changing the fonts worked. What also worked was going to options-LibreOffice-Fonts and using the replacement table to replace all MS Sans Serif with a font in the list like Microsoft Sans Serif. Thus eliminating visiting each blank comment and making the font change. Of course it changed every cell that was using MS Sans Serif. Thanks a lot for helping me understand what was happening. As far as I'm concern the issue is resolved and I'll continue with 5.0.1.2. Others can decide if an automatic replacement should happen it a font is not available or some kind of alert for the user.
I think we can resolved as not a bug. Please if you are not agree reopen it. Could report a new as request for enhancement, would be nice an alert about not installed fonts in the file.
