This is a OS-wide convention. It works in a wide variety of Mac programs including TextEdit, Firefox, Chrome, Coda, etc. Mac users have come to expect it. Please add this feature as a default. For people who work routinely with symbols, math, foreign languages, and unicode in general, this is an important convenience feature. Thanks.
It's awkward for one-handed typing, but it would be useful.
