The classical yellow smileys like ;-) are something used in Email programmes. I think that they are not supported in LO in that way, at least not yet. If you try for instance to copy a smiley from a Email programme to LO then the smiley will not be inserted. The same happens if you open a Email with classical yellow smileys in LO. But you can insert emoticons, similar to the yellow Email smileys. You can find them in LO if you go to TOOLS -> AUTOCORRECT OPTIONS -> tab REPLACE and scroll down. If I try to print them as PDF then they printed as expected (tested with LO 5.0.3.2, Win 8.1).
@Andy did you know emoji support in LibO? https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/5.0#Emoji_and_in-word_replacement_support @axet would you please upload here a test file with those smileys that fail to export to pdf?

Created attachment 120547 [details] PDF output of the test file tested under Win8.1 x64 using LibO 5.0.3.1 I don't reproduce the issue. the PDF output correctly shows the smiles. please upgrade to current LibO latest version (5.0.3.2) is available and tell if issue persists. please tell which is your PDF reader software. status NEEDINFO

I have tried last nightbuild http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/libreoffice-5-0/MacOSX-x86_64@49-TDF/2015-11-13_12.04.10/ but still can't produce a proper pdf.
@axet thanks for feedback. next time you report a bug, please tell immediately your O/S. it seems that this is a Mac OS X specific issue. @Alex Thurgood can you please check this one?
