Description Nicolas Saettel 2015-11-19 11:06:41 UTC
I am teaching how to use libreoffice writer and calc at the university, and using extensively the paragraph styles. It would be nice to be able to switch to any style directly from the window "Paragraph Style" (or any other style, for that matter) instead of using the "Styles and Formatting" panel, or even right-clicking on a paragraph to have the "Edit Paragraph Style" option.
Either a drop down menu or any other solution would save a lot of time and click!
I hope it is worth looking into,
Cheers,
Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,

Thanks for writing and your interest in LibreOffice!
There is the Select Style dropdown, at the left of the toolbar Formatting.
And from 5.1, in Writer there will be a menu Style.

Can you please explain if/what misses there compared to your idea?
Regards,
Cor

Or do you mean that in the dialog "Paragraph Style A", you would like to switch to "Paragraph Style B-Z" to change the properties for those :) ?

style dialog and where the styles could be selected

Hi Cor,
Thank you for your answer
I am aware of the *useful* drop down menu, but I am more thinking of the dialog itself (see file attached), where one could directly change the style.
When I am grading papers (i.e. verifying that teh students are following my instructions on each styles), it is tedious to re-open each time such dialog (from wherever!)
Cheers
Nicolas

Thanks Nicolas. Got it now...

You know since some time the Style drop down is also in the side bar.
That has led to some - not yet finished discussion. In that, there also is an idea that changes the side bar in such a way, that properties of a style (and not only direct formatting properties) can be changed.

See

and

Interesting.

What do you think?

Hi Cor,
You made valid points on the side bar but I would really like to be able to change it directly from the dialog.
Thanks
Nicolas

From my point of view, allowing to switch to another style from the current edition dialog will be confusing between editing another style or changing the name of the current style. I prefer the current workflow using Style and Formatting window to choose the style to be edited.

I propose to close this enhancement request as wontfix.

Best regards. JBF

Switching the style per dropdown would make it necessary to adopt all setting in this dialog regardless what was changed before. Of course a confirmation might help but that's very unusual. We had a similar discussion for the new area fill style dialog where Jay convinced me to have a clear distinction between the selection of a style and setting its properties.

So I agree with Jean-Baptiste.

Hi all,
Thank you for your responses, you make a good point in terms of usability for the users, it is to bad for me but I understand.
You can switch it to wontfix, thanks

Thanks for your response, Nicolas.
Still there are possibilities to improve style handling and make life easier for you too :)

There are bugs around this, or maybe a draft /container issue somewhere..
Heiko or .., any pointer for Nicolas?

cheers - Cor
