Dear LibreOffice Team,

I love your software, and I just supported it with a $10 donation. I consider that money well spent, even if you ignore this humble feature request.

I like to set up the format of my outlines/bullet lists etc. just-so, and I have two or three different outline formats that I like to use: one for writing exams, one for lecture notes, etc.

Each time I start a new document, I have to fiddle with the formats again. Unless I am missing something, there is no way to save an outline format for later use.

Could you implement this?

What I envision is a button in the outline formatting dialogue that says "save this format". When you click on it, you get a save dialogue, where you can name the new format, etc. There would be another button on the outline formatting dialogue, labelled, "Use Saved Format". Clicking this button would produce a dialogue with list of saved formats to select and use. The same dialogue would allow you to rename or delete one of the items on the list. To edit a saved format, return to the original outline formatting dialogue, change settings as desired, and click "save this format" again.

I believe this is a feature that not even (shudder) MS Word has!

Thanks!!

Why not create a template where you set up your list styles? Then you could start certain new documents with the template.

If this is ok, please set to RESOLVED INVALID.

Thank you for your reply. The fix you suggest would only partially resolve the problem. It assumes that I only use an outline in a particular kind of document, or that I use outlines in isolation from other kinds of writing. If that were the case, then every time I want an outline, I could open the template and start.

However, I (and other writers) often include an outline in the middle of some larger document. Sometimes we do not know that there even will be an outline included until the document is partly finished. Sometimes I start by writing prose, get half-way through, and then revert to outline as a way of quickly sketching out the end (to be fleshed out at a future session).

In order for me to use your template solution, I would have to use the template for every document, just in case I should decide to include an outline. This is an ugly kluge, but I cannot deny that it would work.

Thanks!

Sorry for not thinking of this earlier, but how about modifying your default template to contain the styles: https://help.libreoffice.org/Writer/Changing_the_Default_Template

I don't see why having the necessary styles always at hand would be an ugly kludge.
