Description tole 2016-01-25 22:05:13 UTC
The issue appeared with 5.0.4.2 release (both the installed and portable versions), and seems to be persistent despite bringing back all settings to default values and even reinstalling LibreOffice.

The Polish Programmer's Keyboard Layout (PLP) in Windows can produce any of the Polish characters with diacritical marks (ąćęłńóśź) by pressing the corresponding unaccented character with either Right Alt or Ctrl+Alt.

With the newest "fresh" version of LibreOffice, the Writer app ignores that system-wide setting and Polish characters can be typed with Right Alt only. Pressing Ctrl+Alt does the same as Left_Alt+letter, that is, invokes a menu command, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+E jumps to Edit, or does nothing, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+L, or invokes whatever is assigned to the key combination in Writer's preferences, e.g. with default settings Ctrl+Alt+C inserts a comment.

In other modules (Impress, Calc, Draw) the keyboard behaves normally.

Unfortunately, it's Writer - an application dedicated to text editing - where anything that goes against ingrained typing habits really affects efficiency.

------------ added 26.01.2016

1. Version 5.0.3.2 is ok (checked with another installation, that hasn't been recently updated), so the issue must have come up later.

2. The development checked on a version 5.1.0 has the same bug.

Can you try 5.0.3.2 on the same system showing the problem? Purge 5.0.4 and install 5.0.3 from here: http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

Report back with findings.

If you still see the problem with 5.0.3 please reset your user profile:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile

Report back with findings.

Thanks!

Hi, Joel,

I wasn't aware that I can download any LO version, not necessarily going back to 4.4.7, as this page http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ might suggest.

I have installed 5.0.3.2 on the same computer (Lenovo G580, Windows 10 Home), and it works perfectly.

The issue must have originated with 5.0.4.1 (the immediate successor of 5.0.3.2), which had the same issue as the newest released version.

Thanks for the "temporary relief" and for your effort put into the development of free software. We are all indebted to people like you.

Glad that you have a temporary fix. The issue is that this is really really niche problem so it's going to not only be hard to confirm but also hard to find someone to fix it....I'll think about possible solutions.

Ah one thing that can be tried if you have the time is to test current master release (maybe the bug is already fixed :) ):

Unfortunately, 5.2.0.0alpha0 has this bug too.

Yes, I realize that the problem may be marginal or imperceptible even for Polish users, many (perhaps most) of whom use Right Alt. I just find having all modifier keys under my left hand more convenient, but it's a matter of personal preference. OK, let's hope that somebody will work on this any time in the future.

This problem isn't limited to the Polish keyboard layout: I also see it with US International, and I suspect it happens on any keyboard layout where Ctrl+Alt+key produces results. As such, I would not call this a niche situation.

Many interesting symbols can be typed using Ctrl+Alt or RAlt, such as €, ² and ½. Using Ctrl+Alt+Shift or RAlt + Shift adds symbols like ° and £. And before I found this bug, I didn't realize I could even use right Alt as an alternative!

Looks like that. And it hasn't been cured in the newest version 5.1.1.3
