Often when creating a presentation, it would be nice to link images because they are still updated in the future (Graphs for example). But a copy of the image should be already stored in the presentation, so if I take it somewhere else the image is still available. So Impress should update the stored image when it changed (or check if changed on restart or by pressing to update).
