Description Yousuf Philips (jay) (retired) 2016-02-16 01:18:13 UTC
When i drag a shape in Draw and have the rulers on, it would be nice to have the ruler markers of the shape move along the rulers during the moving process, so its easier to see when it lines up to a particular position along the ruler.

I'm aware that LO does have the 'helplines while moving' feature, but not all users would be knowledgeable enough to enable this feature and would benefit from the indication directly on the rulers.

OK. NEW.

I'm not aware of any LibreOffice module that shows object position directly at the rulers. It's always in the status bar (with precise values).

GIMP and Inkscape use a small triangle, Krita a line at the rulers to indicate the cursor position; independently from objects (no left/right helplines) and disabled in drawing mode in case of Krita.

That would be annyoing for text when the caret moves on typing. I don't see much benefit.

When you adjust the columns and rows of a table in writer, you see the positions in the ruler.

Never noticed those small triangles before, but also see them in Dia and they are helpful only when resizing a non-constrained shape.

This isnt related to typing, because you can only type inside a textbox or shape. This relates to the moving of that textbox or shape.

Try these steps.
1) Open draw with rulers on
2) Draw a circle
3) Notice the 4 markers in the rulers for the size
4) Move the circle or resize it and notice that the ruler markers only change after the completion of the action

Was looking for other diagram apps that have this feature in it and found it in Visio. < https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPVlWO1rtbE&t=1m44s >

As stated in the description, this features is primarily useful in Draw's default view that has grid and helplines while moving disabled.

I know what you mean. But we have snaplines (Tools > Options > Draw > View > SL when moving) and the precise information at the status bar. That's why additional info at the rulers are not that helpfull.

Cleaning up old tickets. While the request makes a lot of sense it's also a clear RTFM issue. The helplines while moving option is not hidden somewhere and easy to enable. Users have to learn how to use a software. So closing this issue as WFM.

(We could consider to enable the helplines by default.)
