They are showed as two squares in the text page and very shortly as two question marks in a black rhombus. They are sometimes showed correctly in the editor window.

Version: 5.0.4.2 Build ID: 00m0(Build:2) Locale : fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8) I still have the same bug and now, all my 25 equations from the old version are garbage. Yay. The F is correctly showed in the equation editor but not rendered correctly in the text (I see two question marks in black diamonds).
Math uses the OpenSymbol font. Can you confirm that you have the package “fonts-opensymbol” installed?
Yes, libreoffice-core package is build dependent of fonts-opensymbol. See https://sources.debian.net/src/libreoffice/1:5.1.1~rc1-1/debian/control/#L319
