Hi Stéphane, thanks for reporting. I can't reproduce. Win10x64 Version: 5.0.5.2 (x64) Build ID: 55b006a02d247b5f7215fc6ea0fde844b30035b3 For the title looks as if you have installed the PDF import extension, it's no needed because actually it is part of LibreOffice. If so please uninstall the extension and test again. If the issue persist, please try resetting the user profile, sometimes solves strange issues. https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile Usually it's enough renaming/deleting the file "user/registrymodifications.xcu", it affects all the options in Menu/Tools/Options, and the files "user/basic/dialog.xlc" and "scrip.xlc" are overwritten, additionally custom colors in "user/config/standard.soc" are lost.

Please what are the steps you follow to insert the file?
I retested with LO 5.1.0.3 on Windows 7, this bug resists. I do not use any extension. Initially this bug was reported by a Debian user and I retested. Stpes to follow: 1. Open LO writer 2. Click on menu Insert->Document 3. Choose a PDF with the dialog and valid (I take my CV, I did with LO Writer)
I have not forgotten to reset the configuration before!
I don't think insert>document was ever intended to open pdf files. So that's why there's an error. But it would be nice if the error was a bit more informative and not just a 'read-error'.
@MM then I think would be better open a new bug as request for enhancement. Close this one as 'notabug' looks fine, please if you are not agree reopen it.
See https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98533 for enhancement.
