This is an enhancement request to make it easier to edit the lay-out of indexes and ToC's. Currently, all 'contents x' styles have increasing before text indent. This interferes with editing the lay-out of a ToC via the "Insert Index or Table of contents" window, because a user has to take into account the indent of the text style when adjusting tab distances. For me, this has been very confusing, because I thought it was not possible to have a smaller space before the number. Adjusting the lay-out of a ToC is very confusing anyway, so any little bit of improvement would help.
Instead, the distances should be set using tab stop positions (which are set via the "Insert Index or Table of contents" window).
Please add a few numbers what you expect. Level 1 (using contents 1) is without indentation (0cm), and level 2 (contents 2) indents with 0.5cm before text. All styles break at the same right position (e.g. 17.09cm tab right for L2, 17.59cm for L1). We talked shortly about this ticket in the design meeting. Styles are a very flexible way to manipulate index entries and the defaults are good. But it would be interesting to provide several presets where the user can select the right one (and of course add own styles). But I'm closing this ticket as NEEDINFO wasn't changed for >2 month (and the request is a WFM).
