tried to update from ver 4 to ver 5 twice. both times when I open libre office I am told the latest update is (still) available! I cannot update it though I downloaded the ver 5.

Please describe more the problem. Do you have some error during installation?
New version you can download at https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ , then close LibreOffice and quickstarter and install it.

I have changed my request now. I dropped the update of libre 4. then updated now to libre 5. I uninstalled libre 4 but the programs are still on my PC. the icons still lead to libre 4 and open it in libre 4.

I have to click libre 5 icons seperately to get libre 5 to install.

how do I now uninstall the remnants [the whole program] of libre 4 which CPM [comodo program management] remove programs did not successfully remove? CPM and windows remove programs show no trace of libre 4 but the programs are still there in start menu and still work.

I think libre 4 may be at various locations which CPM could not find. I like to remove them totally but do not know how as CPM does not show that libre 4 is on my PC.

I'd suggest reinstalling the same 4.x version you were using, and uninstalling via its normal installer, then install the latest version. Of course upgrading should work, too, but since you were having issues, uninstalling first might be safer.

Let's hope the suggestions worked. If you're still having problems, reset status to UNCONFIRMED with details.
