Created attachment 133948 [details] Selection excluding line end: highlight ok In the user interface of Writer selected text is usually highlighted by light blue background for the selection. If the selection extends past the end of a line, the light blue background vanishes and the selection is indicated by a light blue outline around the selection. This is less visible, especially if one wants to check a large selection by scrolling to one of its ends. This error happens on a lenovo T400 under lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS Release: 16.04 Codename: xenial uname -rm 4.8.0-53-generic x86_64

Result of a trial of LibreOffice Version 5.3.2.2.-snap-1 shows: Apparently this version does not suffer from this error.
Please always copy and paste the info from Help - About so we know more about your system. Using Snap might also affect this. You now have the option to test new releases as AppImages: http://libreoffice.soluzioniopen.com/index.php/pre-releases/ After download you can just right-click the file, set as executable and then double-click to run it. Does 5.4 beta2 still show the problem?
Created attachment 133983 [details] selection in a headline: 1-eol Version: 5.4.0.0.beta2 Build ID: 3cc1cdd8ee50f144e5514da51800a08119754d8f CPU threads: 2; OS: Linux 4.8; UI render: default; VCL: gtk2; Locale: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); Calc: group shows the same syndrome: As long as the selection in a headline does not contain the last character of a line, the shade is shown. As soon as I include the last character of the line or more, only the thin outline remains to indicate the selection. For normal text the behaviour there differs: There I may selsct to the end of line (i.e. including the last character) and I geht the shade. However if I extend the selection at least one more character, only the outline remains.

Created attachment 134426 [details] cell B4 in LO Calc was selected, it looks like this
I searched in the internet for ideas how to circumvent this problem. I came across this post: https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/69375/calc-active-cell-not-highlighted-or-bordered/ and I found out that I also have the problem deplored there (I did not try LO Calc before). My picture in the last comment above shows the situation after I have clicked on cell B4. Unfortunately I do not understand the description how to overcome the problem given there. I don't know how to use modeset and do not know if it is supported om my computer (which is a lenovo T400). lspci -v gives me: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory It is fixed in Ubuntu 17.04, so you are advised to upgrade: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104244#c20 Please let us know after upgrading, if the Writer problem went away, so we can close this report.
Changing the version of the operating system is a terrible thing which might even require to obtain new licencing information for Mathematica. I downgraded to Version: 5.1.6.2 Build-ID: 1:5.1.6~rc2-0ubuntu1~xenial2 CPU-Threads: 2; BS-Version: Linux 4.8; UI-Render: Standard; Gebietsschema: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); Calc: group which is the "natural one" for Xubuntu 16.04 and which shows the same problem on my Xubuntu 16.04. Then I posted a bug report on launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1701942 LO in an LTS version of (X)ubuntu should not have a bug which reduces the usability of this very popular program.
In a live system Xubuntu 17.04 amd64 this error does not show up with the LibreOffice-Version 5.3.1.2 which is part of that distribution. I tested it on the same Lenovo T400 laptop.
