Description Paul G. 2019-05-04 17:17:00 UTC
Description:
I dont know if this is possible but it would be really nice if one wants to change the font of a selected text, to have a preview of the font in the actual selected text while the font combobox is selected and scrolling with the mousewheel through the fonts. Like some kind of realtime change while mouse-scrolling through the font list.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Select a text.
2. Hover mouse above font selection box
3. Scroll mousewheel to change font
4. Watch selected text changing font

Actual Results:
does not work yet

Expected Results:
would be nice if that works

Reproducible: Always

This is already available, but the "sample" string is limited to about 70 characters at 12pt.

Select the sample, and either Format -> Character... or r-mouse click for context menu -> Character and open the "Character" dialog... make the font selection from the Font tab.

It will show a formatted preview with selected font, font style and any applied OTF features applied to start of the selected text.

Well, I didnt knew that, thanks, but still, this is not a nice "live preview".
The intention was to have a text preview in the actual document to get
a glimpse how the text would look in the page rather than in an isolated
extra window. And I really miss the simplicity of just scrolling through
the font list with my mousewheel and watching the font change without
to have press enter to activate the font. Same applies to font size selection box. If I mousewheel scroll through the sizes I then have to press enter to apply the size...

I don't get your point.
If you just want to see how a font or a size looks like in live, just change it directly, why would you need an extra step ?
Preview can be seen in the Character dialog.
Closing as RESOLVED NOTABUG

It was an enhancement request, but agree the use case is weak as we already provide the limited preview in the Character dialog.

Applying via mouse click, rather than a dynamic wheel scroll as requested, is justified--bcz scrolling a live preview would be a horrible performance drag waiting for canvas repaint to move onto the next selection.

In other words, with forced click selection, the UI behavior and UX can be assured.

And current "non-scrollable" selectionfunction supports both direct formatting (against selection), or of entire document (against styles by modification).

IMHO => WF
