Description:
Hi,

I would like to suggest an improvement to the Writer's sidebar UI. In the Style pane, all styles are displayed by default.
Let's take the example of the text styles. It is possible to select a subset of these styles by selecting for example "Automatic" or "Titles styles" in the bottom button, but when visiting table styles or page styles and then go back the text styles, this is the option "All styles" that is again activated.

This can be a problem when there is a lot of memorized styles, as it is the case for the text styles. The important amount of information displayed makes it difficult to simply select the desired style. To fix this problem, a possibility would be to select "Automatic" as default in the bottom button of the Style pane in the sidebar. In this way, the amount of information displayed to the user would be limited by default, and if necessary, the user can use the bottom button to display other styles.

What do you think about this suggestion of improvement? If this is not clear, I can join screen captures if necessary.

Actual Results:
Now, in the style panel of the sidebar, this is the "All styles" that is selected by default.

Expected Results:
It could be great that the "Automatic" option would be selected by default.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

This of course would be for all LO modules with Sidebar decks displaying Styles. Similar to being able to customize the Toolbar combobox Droplists (and Style previews) see also bug 126196--providing an alternative (user customizable) listing for the 'Styles' deck would be useful.

And maybe as a new default once a new customizable list is fleshed out, til then the current default display of the 'Hierarchical' on the Sidebar deck seems sufficient.

Don't think this request goes that far. It's more to default to "Automatic" instead of "All Styles", which was suggested by Jay in bug 69551 comment 7. Remarkable is the discussion below - it's not clear that all users would benefit from a change.

So my take here is duplicate; I like the idea to remember the selection and would keep this ticket open for just this. Opinions?

I never used "Automatic". The main reason is, that I have no idea what "Automatic" means. What are the criteria to group styles to autmomatic. Im not against the proposal to use it as default, but the label should be more clar.

I do remember that indeed. Thanks for linking.

Yep - fine for me.

We talked about this topic in the design meeting. What users set should be respected and remembered, so the filter whether Automatic or All should be applied after switching from paragraph to character styles and back. The same is true for the other style types, of course.

Could be an easy hack.
