Description Joe Abraham 2019-07-17 13:08:43 UTC
Description:
(I filed this on "Ask LibreOffice", they sent me here.

This is somewhere between a bug and a feature fix/request. I use Navigator for books and other long documents I am working on. It would be great help if the Navigator settings were document-specific.

1) Open/Closed Constancy.

If I open Navigator for a file in Writer, every document I open thereafter - Calc, Slide Show, whatever - has Navigator open, and I have to stop and close it to open up window space, to see what I'm doing. And vice versa, for documents where I want it open, it will default to the previous document's settings. It would be great if my open/closed preferences were saved with each document.

And for a new, empty document, I can't see that there is any reason for Navigator to be open.

2) Drop-Down Constancy.

Much more problematic, when I close a document where I was using Navigator, when I reopen it, all of my outline is collapsed back to the minimal. I have to go through the outline opening it back up, in order to be able to see my headings, and navigate around the document. That may sound trivial, but I typically work on several long documents at once. Often, I simply want to add a single insight or an article citation and then close the document. But on something as long as a book, I may need to open 20 or more chapter headings, and many more subheadings and even sub-subeadings in order to find my place, and to figure out where I want the information to go. It is particularly frustrating.

In effect, I would like Navigator to be better at helping me navigate. Thanks.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a document.
2. Open or close Navigator.
3. Open another document.

Actual Results:
I was irritated.

Navigator settings are global, instead of document-specific.

Expected Results:
I was not irritated.

Reproducible: Always

@Jim, what do you think of this enhancement ?

A report should deal with only a single topic, but I will comment.

This is somewhat related: bug 114506

Would implementing the request of bug 58192 solve this for you?

Of course we can cram more and more state data into documents, but I think we should draw the line somewhere.

Hello Joe Abraham,
Could you please try to reproduce it with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ?
I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the latest version.

Navigator Closes sections after closing file: before & after
Comment 5 Joe Abraham 2021-12-04 02:25:40 UTC
Hi Xisco,

I am running Ubuntu 21.10, & LibreOffice 7.2.2.2; I tried upgrading LibreOffice with Synaptic, but I still have the same version.

In the first attached file, I created a 'book' with two chapters, both are open.

I close the file, reopen it, only one chapter is open.

As I noted originally, when I am working on a book with 20 chapters, with multiple sections, and occasionally sub-sections, and I close the file, when I reopen most/all of the chapters are closed.

Getting it back into working condition with everything open takes a while, costs me time.

Joe: I'm still waiting for your reply on this. If you agree, we could close your report as a duplicate of bug 58192

Setting to "needinfo" for Buovjaga's question.

That enhancement would seem to work.

Sorry for the delay, answered above, but yes.
