At present, if Chapter Numbering is used, then Edit Style is greyed out in the Paragraph Style dialog (with a tooltip explaining why). Enhancement suggestion: In this case, keep the Edit Style active, but have it open the "Chapter Numbering" dialog, instead of the Numbering Style dialog. - avoids having to explain why Edit Style is greyed out. - saves the user from having to use the Menu (Tools > Chapter Numbering...) to edit - highlights the connection between Paragraph Style dialog and the Chapter Numbering dialog
I con't understand why you heve opened a new bug report instead of add a new comment to bug 129527. => I close this as a duplicate. Feel free to change it back to UNCONFIRMED with a short reasoning, if you don't agree. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 129527 ***

Bug #129527 concerns the fact that the "Edit Style" button is greyed out (when it should not be), when using numbering styles (that are not chapter numbering). This bug report is about the special case where Chapter Numbering style is used, and the (current) intention is to have the Edit Style greyed out. This report is a simple enhancement proposal -- instead of greying out Edit Style in this special case, simply let the button open the Chapter Numbering dialog box (so that the user does not have to use the menu (Tools > Chapter numbering) to edit the numbering style (in the Chapter numbering case).

Sorry, my fault. I got it mixed up with bug 129669. Both are about settings in outline & numbering tab of the paragaph style dialog if that style is in use for chapter numbering. So I thought it should be possible to merge them
The tooltip was introduced with bug 122637. It is not really informative with "disabled because chapter numbering and paragraph style don't match"; actually since the reason why we disable is not perfectly clear to me. Likely because of the circular dependency. "Numbering Style" is hopefully a dying tab, see bug 120905 and patch https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/70765. But of course, the disabled controls are not really a prototype of good usability.
I agree with the proposal (but the button label should change accordingly)
(In reply to Mike Kaganski from comment #5) > I agree with the proposal (but the button label should change accordingly) So let's do it.
(In reply to Mike Kaganski from comment #5) > (but the button label should change accordingly) Maybe not. From user point of view, "Chapter Numbering" is shown in dropdown box, and "Edit Style" would be meaningful. More important is that the dropdown box should not be active in the Chapter Numbering case, while remaining active for the other List (Numbering) Styles.
I’ve been just thinking about filling this. Since it already exists, here’s my 2 cents. In my opinion it makes perfect sense to use the button to open Heading Numbering… window if a heading numbering is applied to the style. It would enhance user experience if this button could be utilized to open the Heading Numbering window. This improvement would streamline the editing of numbering (and bullets) when working with styles.
