Description: Some of us have various Notes written in our Impress presentations, but no way to view them live while giving the presentation. For example: (1) We may have only a single monitor available, perhaps on a laptop. (2) At the college where I teach, a single splitter cord was used to connect every room's desktop & projector, so the systems do not recognize two monitors. It would be enormously productive in these situations to carry a paper script with just the Notes available. Note that I am NOT talking about existing NOTES SLIDE PAGES, which would be excessive. I AM talking about about JUST NOTES themselves, in a writer document (say, with titles from the slides as labels to keep one's place). I've seen numerous others searching online for this same facility, with very complicated workarounds proposed. Examples: - https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=97562 (suggested: manually copy-paste all Notes text to a separate file, one slide at a time). - https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg38932.html (suggested: print presentation to a PDF, convert PDF to text, manually cut out all the non-Notes text). So: It would save many of us a great deal of time and effort, currently manually copying Notes out by hand as a regular process, if a new feature allowed us to export just the Notes (not slides) to a writer document. Additional use case: (3) Teaching online using software such as Blackboard Collaborate, which can load and show presentations, but has no way of viewing the presenter Notes from within that software.
As for single monitor, which is really justified expectation, that would be solved with bug 62179. As for export, Bug 45498 is about adding to Export what's available in Print-Impress tab. Export Notes seems to be a new request. Essentially you're circumventing bug 62179. If you would still hold a presentation from paper Notes, I wouldn't accept this request. So I'll mark duplicate. I'll also add this in bug 45498 . *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 62179 ***
(In reply to Daniel Collins from comment #1) > Additional use case: (3) Teaching online using software such as Blackboard > Collaborate, which can load and show presentations, but has no way of > viewing the presenter Notes from within that software. That would be different. I'm not aware of this software, but your request should be towards them. Only if they cannot make it and depends on LO (like missing API), they may open a new bug.
This is disappointing. None of the linked bugs address any of the use-cases brought up in this feature request. (1) The single-monitor use is not solved by bug 62179, and this request is not a duplicate of that one. That bug request is to see the presenter view on the one monitor for rehearsal/timing purposes. In contrast, this new feature request is for actually showing the presentation to an audience, while having access to the notes in a separate concise document, on a different device or printout. (2) As stated at the outset, this feature is NOT about the NOTES SLIDES PAGES, so the export feature bug 45498 does not apply. This feature desires a concise script with JUST NOTES alone. For example: We may have a long presentation with just a few notes. Exporting and printing the entire presentation, with most pages having no notes, is wasteful and not usable in practice. (3) The suggestion that this is some bug in outside software is a misdirection. For example, Blackboard Learn is the most widely used learning management system in academia, and its videoconferencing system Collaborate is now in heavy use for distance learning. That system can present to audience members PDFs that instructors have created and exported in Impress, but we need some outside way to access the notes script. That system does not interface directly with Impress, and it surely never will. In short: There is a critical need for a concise Notes script, on a disconnected device or printout, in many cases where the presentation is being displayed to audiences with only a single display available (in person or online). Without this feature, many instructors who wish to use Impress for presentation creation (as evidenced by the links at top) will need to keep spending time making manual copies of their notes, on an ongoing basis.
Changing status from DUPLICATE to WONTFIX, which is a more accurate description. This new feature request is definitely not a duplicate of the suggested bug 62179. The use cases are, in fact, exactly opposite (presenter view vs. audience view on single display channel).
For contrast, note that MS Office can accomplish the requested functionality here in two steps: (1) Send PowerPoint to Word (2) Delete Slides column As shown here: http://www.avantixlearning.ca/microsoft-powerpoint/tip-export-microsoft-powerpoint-speaker-notes-word-training/ So those in need of this function may wish to use MS PowerPoint as an alternative.
For those who need this feature in the future, I wrote a small standalone Java utility that extracts Notes text from an Impress HTML Export: https://github.com/danielrcollins1/ImpressExtractNotes
I added this in bug 45498. If not resolved there, we'll reopen (set New).
That makes sense to me for the inclusion and language in bug 45498, sounds like a plan. Thanks for the attention to this.
