Description Marcin Segit 2020-08-09 19:06:02 UTC
Description:
Writer crashes when I try to work with a long document - 218 pages of translation tables exported from TRADOS. Writer crashes upon clicking any of the menus, go to page on the bottom bar or randomly without any extensive menu interaction. It crashes regardless of hardware acceleration or Skia turned on, with the file in docx, rtf and odt formats.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open document.
2. Click any options, usually it crashes after go to page selection. It should crash.

Actual Results:
Writer crashes. Sometimes recovery mode and crash report freeze as well.

Expected Results:
I can operate the menus and work on the document.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
I'm not able to attach the file as it's a proprietary translation. I can. however, gather logs and other info - just let me know what needs to be done.

Launch LibreOffice -> Tools -> Options -> LibreOffice -> View -> Check Force software rendering

They cause could be Skia Vulkan (the document itself could be the cause too, but we have to start somewhere)
Comment 2 Marcin Segit 2020-08-09 21:24:17 UTC
Same behavior with Skia forced software rendering turned on. I didn't even have to click on anything as Writer crashed on itself after a minute or two.

I also copied the content to a fresh document and saved it into odt, rtf and docx. Same thing, Writer crashes as with the original document with all three formats.

@Xisco
Private doc situation..

Could you give a try at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps?
Comment 5 Xisco Faulí 2020-08-10 08:12:34 UTC
Thank you for reporting the bug. To be certain the reported issue is not related to corruption in the user profile, could you please reset your Libreoffice profile ( https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile ) and re-test?

I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' if the issue is still present
Comment 6 Marcin Segit 2020-08-10 11:00:31 UTC
I tried a couple of things following your advice on profile reset.

While loading the document I've mentioned in my initial report:
- Writer works fine in Safe mode with profile reset.
- Writer works fine with a fresh profile.
- Writer crashes as described above with LanguageTool v5.0.1 extension installed on a fresh or existing profile.
- Writer works fine with LanguageTool v5.0 extension installed on an existing profile.

At this point I'm assuming that the problem is somehow related to the LanguageTool v5.0.1 extension. I've reverted to v5.0 and things seem to be stable so far.

If this is enough to close the issue as resolved then I'm happy with that. Unless you see a need to investigate this further. Setting back to UNCONFIRMED.
Comment 7 Julien Nabet 2020-08-12 08:22:54 UTC
I install LanguageTool 5.0.1 and don't have any crash with a brand new doc containing some paragraphs of "Lorem Ipsum" (see https://www.lipsum.com/).
Do you reproduce this on any document or with any document?
Would you have a precise step by step method to reproduce this?
Comment 8 Telesto 2020-08-12 09:10:28 UTC
Maybe Java related? There where some changes in that area?

File that crashes Writer with LanguageTool 5.0.1 installed
Comment 10 Marcin Segit 2020-08-12 13:50:43 UTC
I was not able to reproduce the issue with any other document. Exact steps would be just to open the document and start working on it, clicking on menus or just wait a bit - it would crash every time with LanguageTool 5.0.1.

I randomized the text in the doc, keeping the structure, comments changes etc. intact so I can upload it (see the attachment). Maybe that will be of some more help. Unless this is an issue specific only to my setup. :)

just fixing mimetype of the file.
Comment 12 Julien Nabet 2020-08-12 16:26:59 UTC
I still don't reproduce the crash, it's just very slow.
I think I won't be able to help here so uncc myself.
Let's put it back to UNCONFIRMED then.

I can't confirm it with

Version: 7.0.1.2 (x64)

No repro by others, OP indicates it seems related to a specific version of an extension, and hard to give exact reproduction steps - might as well close this since no activity for months and OP suggested it can be closed.
