Description Mark 2020-10-17 15:35:43 UTC
When encryption software (OpenPGP, etc) went missing from my system, Calc simply, silently crashed on opening a password-protected file

Somehow, gpg4Win got uninstalled from my PC (don't ask :-)

After this, when I double-clicked a password-protected file, the splash screen was displayed for a second or so, and then a very quick flash of the Calc window, then nothing.

I tried just opening Calc, then opening the file from the app, but nothing happened.

It took me quite a while to figure this out. After repair-installing LO, then uninstalling and re-installing LO, rebooting multiple times, then trying to find out what might have changed on my system, only to find the problem was gpg4win. After re-installing gpg3win, Calc stopped crashing.

If Calc is having a problem with like this, why doesn't is say so, rather than just silently crashing? No messages or anything.

Why doesn't the LO installer say something when encryption tools are missing? Can't it just bundle one of the (free) PGP tools?

You need to write reproducible steps.
What you describe is for http://ask.libreoffice.org/ not Bugzilla.

Sorry. I thought it was obvious how to reproduce this problem. Uninstall gpg4win. Ah, context, I suppose...

To re-create this issue:

1. Uninstall gpg4win
2. Double-click on a password-protected Calc .ods file (my file was created and password-protected months ago, and has been opened and modified several times this very week)
3. See the Calc splash screen
4. See the actual Calc window flash very briefly - not even one second - and then silently disappear
5. See the splash screen silently disappear
6. Re-install gpg4win
7. Double-click the same file
8. See the splash screen
9. See the Calc window
10. Wait for the Password Entry dialog
11. Enter the password
12. Enjoy viewing the file

Things to note:

A. Calc quit silently, with absolutely no notice.

B. When I Repair/Installed LO, and then when I completely uninstalled and re-installed it, not only did it NOT fix the problem, but there was nothing to tell me that there was no PGP tool/library/whatever on my system, and it didn't offer to install one.

C. I actually DID ask about this problem on ask.libreoffice.org just prior to entering this on bugzilla. I was told that I needed to report it on bugzilla. I agree with those who answered. How could they actually have helped?

The reason I reported this problem is I wanted to spare any users the wasted time and effort in trying to find a solution to this problem in the future. And because I was angry that I had to go through all I went through just to see what was in my file. I'm just lucky that I noticed that pgp4win got uninstalled from my system, and that I have at least some skills in diagnosing problems. Other uses may not be so lucky.

In my opinion, Calc should not just silently crash without explanation. Even after completely uninstalling and re-installing LO. I call this a bug.

I don't see connection between ODS with password and GPGwin.
Your bug would be: "cannot open password protected file".
Reproducible steps mean you should attach such a file (without personal info) and write a password.
(normally, if you create ODS with password in LO 6.3.6 it can be open)

Alright. You win. What I said happened didn't ever happen. Calc doesn't silently crash after I uninstall gpg4win from my system and it doesn't stop crashing after I re-install it. Are you happy now? If it ever happens to anyone else, you can deal with it then. I am not going to diagnose your problem for you.

No sample file, I close as insufficient data.
