Description: The spell-check used to find an extra space I added by mistake, say "I go" (with two blank spaces between the words). It no longer spots them. Steps to Reproduce: 1. leave two spaces where one would be normal 2. 3. Specific language? And any change to install 7.1.0.3 aside for testing? 6.0.7.3 bit old
Good morning, Spellcheck does not spot two spaces in English and now I've tried it with a Spanish text in a Writer file and the result is the same. As soon as I got your email (in December 2020) recommending that I install your latest version, I tried to download 6.4.7. I got the error message "The item LO is in use," even though I had no file open. I wrote LO and Italo Vignoli answered me on December 22, 2020: "Unfortunately, the origins of that message can be many. "Please check with the suggestions provided by this MacWorld article: https://www.macworld.com/article/3339676/how-to-delete-a-file-that-macos-says-is-in-use.html "If it doesn't work, there is a large list of potential answers here: https://www.google.com/search?q=libreoffice+installation+can%27t+be+completed+because+the+item+is+in+use+site:ask.libreoffice.org&sxsrf=ALeKk01gybXCHLONiO4p36AdM910C_ySfg:1608650538080&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwja846f8uHtAhUPuaQKHWX7BncQrQIoBHoECAEQBQ" (end of his email). All the instructions were too complicated and not even easily understood. Mind you, I'm no idiot (four graduate degrees + 55 years of publishing in professional journals -- just not in computer science) and I was sure that I would mess things up, maybe even disable my Mac, if I tried. So I'm living with the limitations of 6.0.7.3. There are bigger problems in life right now for someone my age. I got the same error message just now when trying to download 7.0.4. David L. Gold
Created attachment 175476 [details] odt file containing sample of text in four languages
Created attachment 175477 [details] screenshot - spellcheck of the languages_sample.odt file
I tried to reproduce this bug in version 7.2.1.2 Extra spaces are correctly found in English sentences. Not in any other language. I attached languages_sample.odt file containing four languages - I chose the correct language for each paragraph and added typos in each paragraph to show that the spellcheck for each language is working, but extra spaces are not checked. Only the English text is checked for extra spaces. See also attached screenshot of the document. Steps to Reproduce: Create new file in Writer. Write a sentence in any language other then English, add extra space between any two words of the sentence. For example Spanish sentence: Mi nombre es Juan. If the language is not recognized, set the proofing language in Tools -> Language -> For All Text -> Spanish(Spain) Or alternatively just open the attached document and see the issue in Czech, Spanish and French. Expected results: Extra spaces should be underlined with wavy blue line. Actual results: Extra spaces are ignored. This is more a feature request then a bug report as tools for checking word spacing are apparently available only for English - judging from the settings in Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> English Sentence Checking These settings don't influence the checking in any other language. When I tried opening the attached document in MS Word the spellchecker found the first extra space in each of the sentences regardless of the proofing language. I would expect Writer to do the same as LibreOffice is intended for professional use. Checking the typographic errors only for English lowers the quality significantly for users from non-english speaking countries. Extra spaces are easily overlooked and the document will not have a professional quality. D. Gold, I'm wondering if you updated the English Dictionary in your LibreOffice? If you have done so then you might be being affected by this bug: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=140516 Also there is forum thread on this here: https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=101&t=106341 Going by those it seems that if you manually update the English speller then you lose the "English Sentence Checking" capabilities of LO. And, hence, the functionality that you relied on to spot two or more consecutive 'spaces' just vanishes for 'no apparent reason'.
Radish has asked me whether I have updated the English dictionary. If by "update the English dictionary" is meant "add to it words that it does not have but which I use so much that I want to add them in order to keep the spellchecker from flagging them," the answer is yes (but I have been doing that for years when checking the spelling of texts and only in the last year or so has the spellchecker failed to catch two spaces where I should have typed one). If, however, you mean something like download the latest version of LO's English dictionary, the answer is no.
D. Gold, I meant had you downloaded and updated the English speller from the .oxt file you downloaded. As you haven't done that then my guess that your issue might be related to the other bug I pointed to was a dud steer. Just adding new words to the speller of your own bat should not generate this kind of problem. In any case for English language I tested your issue in LibreOffice Still 7.1.6 and LibreOffice Fresh 7.2.1 and if I've setup "English Sentence Checking" properly (I have) it finds 2 or more consecutive spaces just fine. Note that "English Sentence Checking" only works for English language, it doesn't work for languages other than English; this is by design so not a flaw in the component.
This does not seem limited to macOS, so setting OS all for greater visibility
(In reply to eisa01 from comment #9) > This does not seem limited to macOS, so setting OS all for greater visibility It also happened on Windows ("English Sentence Checking" and "Grammar Checking (Portuguese)" ).
