Description: In Track Changes mode, I would like an option for deletions to disappear rather than be marked by a strike-through. It's redundant and tedious to require the user to "accept" the deletion before it disappears. That should be optional, not mandatory. I find myself having to "accept" tiny insignificant changes constantly. It wastes huge amounts of time. Steps to Reproduce: 1.Select text and hit 'delete.' Actual Results: A strike-through appears (or whatever formatting change chosen in the preferences, which DO NOT offer the option of actually deleting the text). Expected Results: I would like the option for the deleted text to disappear, even in Track Changes mode. Reproducible: Always User Profile Reset: No Additional Info: The current default method is a massive waste of time that could be spent on productive work.
You reported against previous LO, likely without previous search, which is also waste of time. You should test daily master, there were changes. Can this be a duplicate of Bug 34355 - Option to show track changes in margin?
I took the liberty to change the status to new. This is not exactly a duplicate. Even if there is a real improvement with the new option (see screenshot attachment 166614 [details] in post #179 of bug #34355), there is still the former string that remains visible in the margin (strikethrough). Would it be possible not to display the deleted string at all? The rationale is that when you release a new version of a document, the vertical lines in the margins are useful to spot the places where changes occurred. But you don't want anything more to be displayed. There is no point displaying the former text.
Note: the title may have to be changed to something like "Track changes: display deletion mark in margin without deleted text". Please confirm if it should be changed or the report closed and a new one created.
This is even more important when text is formatted into columns. Consider: 2 columns of text, with deletions set to appear on the left of the page. Delete/change text in the left hand column. Deletions appear as expected, on the left hand side of the page. Delete/change text in the right hand column. Now, the deleted text appears to the left of the column, overlaying the text in the left hand column, making that text document completely unintelligible/illegible.
BTW - this is in 7.3.4.1 (Windows)
Umm, isn't that the whole point of track changes - to show what has been added and deleted? If you don't want to see deleted text, then turn off show changes! You will still be "tracking the changes", but what you see is the final result. View - Show track changes (off) The notebookbar (under the review tab) has a few more options for "Show Track Changes" - deletions or insertions can be in the margin. (comment 1) In terms of tedious: Edit - Track changes - Manage - Filter - Action - Deletions - Accept all. (Or select several paragraphs and accept change). I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of bug 46188 - requesting some way to minimize the display of deleted text while still showing insertions etc. Otherwise it could be a duplicate of bug 38726. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 46188 ***
There are uses for this when technical authoring. For example, sharing a new version of a specification with just "change bars" shown. This is commonly done to alert the reader to where changes exist in printed documents, but without the "clutter" of seeing the actual tracked changes. In this case, the author would set the tracked changes to hide the deletions, show (but don't modify presentation of) the newly added text, and turn on change bars. Then, when printed (or PDF'd) the reader only sees the change bars on the side of the pages. There might be a simpler way to just add change bars without any other visible tracked changes modifications, but I can't spot it.
