Description Linux 2021-12-22 08:39:53 UTC
Description:
In LibreOffice Writer, an extra word appears in the tooltip when hovering over a footnote (picture attached-LibreOffice-An extra word in the tooltip when hovering over a footnote.gif).
That is, an extra word Footnote with a colon: [Footnote :]
For example, neither Micorosoft Office nor WPS Office has such an extra word!
These two proprietary office suites only display footnote text when hovering over a footnote (pictures attached).

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open LibreOffice Writer and create a footnote with some text.
2. Hover the cursor over the footnote number and look at the displayed text.

Actual Results:
Appears an extra word Footnote with a colon: [Footnote :]

Expected Results:
Therefore, if possible, please delete the unnecessary word [Footnote:] so that only the text of the footnote is displayed when you move the cursor over the footnote.

Reproducible: Always

I don't see it as a bug. The tooltip helps user to understand what this field is, by prepending the referred text with the type of the field. That other suites do not show that helper text is irrelevant, the only question is if this creates problems - and I do not see *what* problem you see here, except for "this car is blue, but I know that other cars may be red" kind.

Note that I do not claim that there is no problem - just that you didn't properly describe it. Please do, and reset the status back to unconfirmed.

The footnotes are not necessarily latin numbers and endnote roman numbers. You can show both in cyrillic lowe case letters, for example (Tools > Foot/Endnotes...).

So the question is whether our users want to know what type of annotation it is or just the reference text.

I prefer the annotation as it is now in LibreOffice.

As such to me that is not a valid argument to change the current situation.
To me, the extra word looks helpful.

All comments agree on keeping the annotation type in the tooltip. It's a feature not a bug.
