up and down arrow examples #1

hi,

in navigator, "promote and demote" are totally ambiguous...

OKAY: as of v7.1.4, it's already "promote outline level", and move "chapter up"

good move! this part is solved :)
for the record: in v7.0.4 this was not the case yet

now only the icons are problematic, as the "promote outline level" points to left or right...

the direction, since we move the outline level UP or DOWN,
should also point to up and down...

problematic? you say: "now, this is ambiguity!" ? :)

I suggest a policy: abbreviations, icons should have a meaning which precisely reflects what's being referenced.. no compromises should be made...

if we can move chapters up/down physically, as well as in the chapter hierarchy, we should not use left/right arrows just to make the situation "clearer" :)

and I'm aware, I think, that different sets of icons are in circulation, and that designers have freedom to interpret the functions (take "save"),
but the developer team could give them directive... as to what and what not to do :)

both arrow pairs should point up and down... only they shouldn't look identical...

very little is enough to make them look non-identical...
see attached pic

the empty and full shapes are not cool, cause they suggest different actions of the same kind...
different sizes or colors would be problematic, too...
(not to mention the different icon sets)

I disagree, because left and right arrows are the normal icons in LO for level promote or demote (for example in lists).
So for me WONTFIX

@peter Nice icons!

In the code, both up and down and left and right can be found in use with outline level. 'OutlineUpDown' are the name of functions used to, as commented in the code 'Increase/Decrease', 'promote/demote', outline level.

Rizal, what is your take on this?

I tend to disagree. We can look out standard numbering for an example. In Bullets and Numbering bar, Promote and Demote precisely reflect the action of east-west/left right direction though in heading this is not entirely reflected with place shifting but the logic is the same. Changing to up down arrow will make more confusion with Move Up/Move Down commands. Galaxy icon theme which were official Sun Ooo.org era use left right as well. There was should exist proper and careful choice here.

So WF for me.
