Description Wally 2022-11-25 16:54:36 UTC
Description:
I just installed 7.4.3.2. I open a Calc file and make a change to it. I press A+F then X to Exit. I can't use the N or the S or the C keys in the Save Document box without using the ALT key with them. Things work with ALT+S, ALT+, ALT+C. Can't you guys do anything right. I don't want to use the ALT key. How you gonna fix this?

I've found another problem where I need the ALT key. I open Calc to an empty screen. I used to be able to just press the "O" key to open my list of files. I now have to use ALT+O. I have to use the ALT key with the other options in the list such as ALT+W for Writer, etc.
Note, also, I can make an option work by using the Tab key to highlight it, although I have not used this function very much in the past.
Regards

Please note that you're talking to a volunteer-driven, community project here. People work really hard to give you - and the world - a completely free office suite. Yes, it's not perfect, but you can be kinder to volunteers who're doing their best to give you something useful :-)

My sincere apologies for the comment I made. That day 2 other pieces of software went South on me after their update. Yes, I do realize that there are many working on LibreOffice and they do a tremendous job considering the size of the package. Again, I do apologize. Regards

That's on the Start Center, not in Calc itself. But yes, the characters that are underlined ("O" for Open, "R" for Recent Documents, "W"riter, "C"alc...) are only working with [ALT], not by themselves. They used to work directly, but since LO 7.4 the focus is on the files (shown at the center of the Start Center), not on the different actions on the right side nor on the menu.

Even when pressing [TAB], it is not clear where exactly the focus is pointing to. In 7.6.alpha, after several (more than 10) [TAB]s, at some point the focus is seen on the Filter field; that's the first indication that [TAB] is actually doing something.

In LO 7.4, pressing [TAB] seems to be jumping to different alternative actions, yet the shortcut letters by themselves do nothing. Whether this (regression) is intentional, I do not know.

Mnemonics are usually activated together with Alt (once a menu is expanded the alt key is not needed anymore). So I wouldn't expect to start the function by just pressing the key.

Whether the change was intentionally or a fall-out from work on the filter, it's an improvement for accessibility being able to quickly go to the recent document and start it.

Here, two different things are mixed together.

1. In reply to Wally from comment #0:
> I can't use the N or the S or the C keys in the Save Document box without using
> the ALT key with them. Things work with ALT+S, ALT+, ALT+C.

This is unclear; was this about the *system's* File dialog? MS Windows itself doesn't provide a mnemonic for e.g. Cancel button. Same happens in Notepad.exe => NOTABUG / NOTOURBUG (if this was about system dialogs). Nothing LibreOffice could do. But - Alt+C doesn't work with that dialog, too. That contradicts the comment 0 's "Things work with ... ALT+C".

LibreOffice's own dialogs, activated using Options->LibreOffice->General->Use LibreOffice dialogs) have these mnemonics working without Alt, when out of edit / list boxes (where the characters indeed have their own meaning), since fix of bug 157649.

2. In reply to Wally from comment #3:
> I open Calc to an empty screen. I used to be able to just press the "O" key to
> open my list of files. I now have to use ALT+O. I have to use the ALT key with

This changed with the fix to bug 151385. And this is a correct thing; it is not an established practice to allow mnemonics without Alt in Windows programs' main windows (as opposed to dialogs). The underline could be confusing (as in 141776); but now it is also removed in the fix to bug 54169.
