Description Brian Robinson 2023-04-24 13:44:55 UTC
Description:
I find the Recent Documents facility in the file menu very useful. At present the list of documents is youngest at the top and oldest at the bottom. However, for me it would be much easier if the list was sorted in alphabetical order. This could be made the default, or a selectable option from preferences.

Actual Results:
Select File> Recent Documents> list..... of names

Expected Results:
The names are in time order rather than alphabetical order.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
I would prefer at least an option for the names to be in alphabetical order. It applies to each section of LibreOffice while operating, but there is a much longer filename in the opening dialogs which could stay.

Thank you for the suggestion, Brian.

There are a few expert configurations available for recent documents, in org.openoffice.Office.Common > History, including the size of the list and if thumbnails are shown in the Start Center.
Improvements coming to recent documents:
- filter in LO 7.5's Start Center: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/7.5#GUI
- showing only the documents relevant to the module that is opened in LO 7.6: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/7.6#GUI

That being said, I don't know of a way to sort those alphabetically, and I can see how some would prefer that behaviour (knowing what the name of the file but not necessarily when it was last edited, relative to other files).

UX team, what do you think? Something for Expert Configuration?

Really, how valid is an alpha sort? Default size of our internal history (as held in user profile .xcu) is *25* entries.

Yes it can be expanded or shrunk via expert configuration--and the MRU list of recents drives the thumbnails displayed on the Start Center.

Access via Tools -> Options -> Advanced 'Open Expert configuration'

Search for these settings:

RecentDocsThumbnail -- false will show generic icons in the SC

PickListSize -- set to 25 from 4.2 builds (was 10 previously), and ranges to 999 IIRC.

Once changed via Expert configuration dialog, the stanzas in the registrysettings.xcu can be directly edited there if preferred.

Point is while pining of documents to the top of the MRU list (bug 38742) would be helpful, it never has been clear that an alpha sort of the MRU stack would be.

Adding this to the meta bug 61174

I would prefer the favorites solution from bug 38742. It would be set via start center and make those items appear on top.

However, sorting the remaining list either by the last usage (which is what "recently used" means) or alphanumeric is doable yet would be an expert option. Don't think many users would change the setting and maybe a macro run on start or exit is better suited.

Thank you both for the input.
The one place where I could see this option in the UI would be in the hamburger menu of the Start Center, but I see the difficulty in having menu, toolbar and Start Center synced in an elegant way...

Just making abbreviations explicit:
* MRU = most recently used
* SC = Start Center

Changing summary as abbreviations won't help discoverability.

We discussed the topic in the design meeting.

Not many user will benefit from a alphanumeric order while on the other hand the favorite approach is more flexible. So we decided to not support the idea.
