Description William Friedman 2023-06-27 04:26:35 UTC
Description:
There are several problems with the "Preview" window in the Bullets and Numbering menu, under both the Customize and Position tabs.

1) In the position tab, changes in the numbering alignment are not reflected in the preview window at all, making it hard to understand visually what those options actually do. (Since, if I understand correctly, these options primarily affect the alignment of single-digit numbers with double-digit numbers, the preview window would have to be modified to show *two* sample entries at the current outline level, one with a single-digit number and one with a double-digit number.)

2) In both the Position and Customize tabs, the preview window appears LTR whether or not the current alignment or the alignment of the associated paragraph style is RTL. (This is ironic because the GUI icon *does* change to reflect RTL alignment.)

3) In both the Position and Customize tabs, the preview window does not reflect the paragraph justification (left, center, right, justified), whether the currently set one or the one of the paragraph style the list is being associated with.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set the text alignment to RTL and the paragraph justification to center.
2. Open Bullets and Numbering (e.g., in the GUI, click the arrow next to the Toggle Numbered List icon and hit "More Numbering").
3. See that in both the Customize and Position previews, the list is displayed LTR and not RTL, and that the center alignment is not reflected.
4. In the position tab, change the numbering alignment to center and right. Notice that nothing changes in the preview window.

Actual Results:
The previews are always LTR and left-justified.

Expected Results:
The preview should be RTL and center-justified.

Reproducible: Always

William, thank your for your suggestions: There is one basic rule in Bugzilla: One report per one problem. So let's focus on the first issue here and please open new reports for the second and third issue. Thank you.

I agree, that this might be helpful, if you have a long list, but perhaps it would make preview too complex. Let's treat it as enhancement request and ask design-team.

Eyal, haven't we discussed this topic and agreed on at least to improve the preview? Cannot find the ticket...

I... don't remember, actually. Sorry :-(

It's certainly true that the preview doesn't reflect RTLness.

... unless it's a tracking/meta-bug. Having three apparently-credible issues with the preview might merit that.

Anyway, AFAIAC, all three sub-issues are indeed valid ones that should be addressed.

So let's do it.
