Description: 'No-break space' and 'narrow no-break space' can be inserted. However, they are shown as normal blank spaces, which makes it highly cumbersome to find out whether they are there. Steps to Reproduce: 1. ALT-I, ALT-G, Return (or: Ctrl-Shift-blank). Actual Results: A 'no-break space' appears to be inserted (hard to check). At any rate, a common blank space is shown on the screen. Expected Results: In previous versions, a blank space of the appropriate width and with a gray background was shown. Reproducible: Always User Profile Reset: No Additional Info: Version: 24.8.2.1 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 0f794b6e29741098670a3b95d60478a65d05ef13 CPU threads: 2; OS: Windows 10 X86_64 (10.0 build 19045); UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win Locale: de-DE (de_DE); UI: en-US Calc: threaded. (Possibly the user is expected to adjust some setting; but this is not transparent.)
Have you selected them in Menu>Tools>Options/LibreOffice Writer>Formatting aids?

Created attachment 196983 [details] ODT file with invisible formatting marks At the end of both lines of this file, a simple blank is shown. Actually, they are special characters.

In some sense, it is a duplicate. However, the bug I reported is a regression. The problem did not exist in version 7.5; there these formatting marks were shown with a gray background. Incidentlly, the discussion on Bug 67669 also comprises suggestions as to how to show these symbols. Maybe somebody could kindly attend to them. It is not helpful to use gray background for just any non-character.
At 24.8, as controlled by the Writer -> Formatting Aids -> 'Non-breaking spaces' checkbox, the no-break space NBSP is shown with a ° in the NPC color on a grey field. While the NNBSP is shown as a blank in a text span--no mark. Better a dupe to bug 161196 where Heiko indicates something more might be needed for the NNBSP See attachment 194241 [details] from bug 161196 for a comparison of 24.8 to the prior 24.2 visibility. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 161196 ***
Do you see a ° for the NBSP in the attachment I submitted? I don't.
(In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #7) > Better a dupe to bug 161196 where Heiko indicates something more might be > needed for the NNBSP > Sorry for the noise, yes bug 67669 is the better dupe. Heiko deferred there for the display of NNBSP after his work on bug 161196 was finished. Visibility of the NNBSP remains controlled by the Writer -> Formatting Aids -> Non-breaking spaces toggle. At present it just shows as a blank in the span.
Created attachment 196984 [details] clip of non-breaking spaces at ends of paragraphs. (In reply to Christian Lehmann from comment #8) > Do you see a ° for the NBSP in the attachment I submitted? I don't. Yes. With NPC showing and the Writer -> Formatting Aids set to show non-breaking spaces. In this clip I've copied and <Atl>+X converted to Unicode the last character for each paragraph. The NBSP is as shown, while the NNBSP is at reduced width. Created attachment 196986 [details] two lines with final non-breaking space Sheer blanks are shown.
(In reply to Christian Lehmann from comment #12) > Created attachment 196986 [details] > two lines with final non-breaking space > > Sheer blanks are shown. You have not enabled NPC "Formatting Marks" <Ctrl>+F10 by keyboard, or the on the 'Standard' toolbar the toggle button showing a Pilcrow icon.
Right, I had not. It did not used to be necessary; these symbols used to be shown in the standard view. I hope this will be restored.
(In reply to Christian Lehmann from comment #14) > Right, I had not. It did not used to be necessary; these symbols used to be > shown in the standard view. I hope this will be restored. Not likely. But yes in the past they were linked to display as Field shading with <Ctrl>+F8, enabled by default. At 24.8 release, for bug 58434, devs removed UI elements that were not actually related to Fields. [1] The formatting and NPC have been migrated to control by the NPC "Formatting Marks" toggle with inclusion in the appropriate Formatting Aids stanzas as deemed useful. =-ref-= [1] https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/166033
