Description Werner Tietz 2024-10-12 09:52:45 UTC
Description:
The short help-popup Text meanwhile hoovering over the mentioned node tells:
»Enable sending Crash Reports to The Document Foundation«

IMHO it should some like:
»Enable creating Crash Reports«
because in the first step it only **create Reports** but dont send anything without consent from user!

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open ⇒ Tools ⇒ Options ⇒ LO ⇒ extented ⇒⇒ ExpertConfiguration
2. search for »CrashReport«
3. hoover over »Misc……CrashReport«

Actual Results:
the help-popup states:
⇒ »Enable sending Crash Reports to The Document Foundation«

Expected Results:
it should be:

⇒ »Enable creating Crash Reports«

Reproducible: Always

Heiko/Xisco: any thoughts here?

Quoting myself from https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/libreoffice-is-breaking-gdpr-law-by-enabling-telemetry-and-updater-by-default-and-not-asking-consent/112481/10

The option allows the whole sending feature, including the creation of the report locally; but what would “enable creating report” mean by itself? There is no feature to simply create reports, without the goal of sending them.

The “enable sending” is different from “send (automatically)”. Of course, there may be a better wording, still.

This is not a "-1", just a request to improve the suggested wording further. I realize that the current wording, if technically correct, may still puzzle people.

Maybe simply "enable crash reporting feature"?
Comment 5 Mike Kaganski 2024-10-12 10:50:00 UTC
Maybe should be separate, but may as well be handled here, only needs a small UI tweak: the checkbox in the UI in the General page could be improved with a mention (maybe on a separate line) that sending will be only done after confirmation shown each time. This is a feature that may create security concerns, so the more information we provide, the better.

+1

I see no benefit from changing the text on the expert option. We could add a note to the UI though, or maybe a tooltip.

Why? Because people getting there, and reading it, are rare and don't deserve attention? ;-) This is a one-liner, I doubt it's worth blocking such a change just because "it's not important in someone's view". Of course, if you believe that the current text is better - that's another thing.

Great!

We discussed the topic in the design meeting. Renaming the expert option bears no harm for the average user, and adding a tooltip to the UI control is beneficial.
