Although the recent document list (File>Recent Documents) works fine in Calc, when in the BASIC IDE the list is always empty.

Have a look here:

You could set it in 
Options → LibreOffice → Advanced → Expert Configuration 
by setting 'ShowCurrentModuleOnly' → False

Will be also possible in LO 25.2 by GUI:

Looks like this is a new feature in the making.

However, I do not see how this is a duplicate of 161752, which is about cell display freezing LO.
