Description dezotti.alexandre 2024-12-23 10:37:54 UTC
Description:
At the moment is neither intuitive nor easy to find out how to set the language for the document. As far as I know, you have to go to settings then modify a setting (default language) while selecting apply only to current document.

The context menu seems a natural place to put this. This would fit nicely just after the "Set language for selection" and "Set language for paragraph" items.

Actual Results:
Difficult to find out how to change the language for a document. Not very user friendly way of doing it.

Expected Results:
Simple menu item, given as much importance as other options such as "set language for paragraph".

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
As far as I'm concerned, having to set specific language for whole documents seems like a more common use case than only for parts. As non native English speaker I often get to work with documents either in English or in my native language.

As far as I understand the request, it's for the "spellcheck error" context menu: it has those "Set language for selection" and "Set language for paragraph" items. Otherwise, the default context menu in the text area doesn't provide such items.

-1 from me.
The *context* menu is for *context* dependent tasks. Adding some "change whole document" tasks there is abuse of context menu.

There is Tools->Language. Discoverable enough - especially when user already found Tools->Options (the actual name for the "go to settings then modify a setting (default language) while selecting apply only to current document").

It could be reasonable to add "Set language for document" to the context menu of the *status bar* language control.

Yes context menu probably not best and Tool->Language seems like a good place.

Regardless of how this would be implemented, I think it would be very helpful to have this feature easier to access. Thanks!

Tools->Language already exists.

I see now, thanks! The documentation would need to reflect this, they don't mention that menu: https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-GB/text/shared/guide/language_select.html

-1, not appropriate on context menu.

Tools -> Language provides selection|paragraph|all text assignment already.

But the help/documentation [1] does not link from <F1> (get a 404 could not find error). And, no mention of control selection|paragraph (not all text) from the StatusBar.
