Description Jon 2025-03-11 05:58:40 UTC
I didn't intend to file a bug but Help->Feedback->Enhancement request brings me here with no other obvious pages.

When opening a new .csv after LibOffice has been closed the 'import' section of the dialog box for FileOpen remembers the last used setting for "from row". This small detail caused me a lot of confusion because a few days ago I was importing a .csv and started from row 7.

Today I imported a stock market closing .csv and could not figure out why the import was not starting the correct place. I assumed a bad file download. But opening in a text file showed I had everything I expected.

I bumbled around for sometime before the ah-ha moment arrived and I changed 'row 7' back to the default 'row 1'.

Perhaps remembering "from row" is an intended feature. And I'm using an older version of LibOffice because I simply don't need the latest and greatest. So maybe this is different in the latest version.

This comment is simply to inform you of my observation and I leave it to you to decide if it qualifies for further action.

Thank you for the great product.

And you are very much welcome to do that.

To remember CSV settings was requested many times. For example in bug 152336, bug 75727, and bug 55236, to pick just a few out of many other. And it has been implemented a long time ago.

Now it is indeed a question whether we need to store even this From Row option. Some users might be surprised like you some other expect it. Tough decision.

Thank you, I agree that it is a tough decision and I am not requesting that a decision on this be made. I was pointing out this without prior knowledge of other requests.

I did search for this sort of thing and it produced so many hits that it is overwhelming to try to read. It is unlikely that my search string used the right terms to produce the results that you mentioned.

It is rare that I would be altering a .csv to limit the beginning line and in the future I'll try to remember that the settings apply to the product and not the spreadsheet.

AFAIC this can be closed.

We discussed the topic in the design meeting. In general it makes sense to remember user settings but some scenarios require the opposite.

We could add a switch, for instance an icon-only button, to let users decide whether to store or rather apply the stored settings. This should be a pattern and also apply on other dialogs. The option could be placed next to the frame label (here Import, Separator Options, Other Options) to not manage every single item.

Alternatively, we could provide an option to either use the detection or any manually remembered "named" settings. This dropdown list would be on the very top of the dialog and replace the automatic settings memory. It applies only in case of the CSV dialog because of the detection feature (see also bug 152336).

Another idea is to add a reset button that allows to switch back to the factory defaults.

Gabriel, what do you think?
