We have Insert -> Footnote and Endnote -> Insert Special Footnote/Endnote dialog where I can use *, **, ***, etc. Could you please to check if it can solve your problem?

Not the original poster, but I don't think that manually picking symbols is a solution: if the text layout change (for example, by introducing a picture that push some paragraphs to the next page) and the last footnote goes to the next page, the whole labeling flow will be broken (usually, when labeling footnotes with symbols you also set it to be per-page). What's been requested here is to add a new _automatic_ scheme, similar to A, AA, AAA, ... but with the asterisk, *, **, ***, ****, ... I think the request is valid, LaTeX offers that kind of footnote labeling with the footmisc package. Setting as NEW.
