Description Dajomu 2025-10-02 10:03:31 UTC
Description:
In Writer there is a field for choosing "heading", "body text", etc. This field is too small and instead of a scrolling area it should be a drop down list. At the same time, there is a lot of unused space to the right which can be used to show more of the content in this field. I am attaching a photo comparing this with OnlyOffice. LO should do the same. Also, hoovering over these should automatically display a preview of the change in the document. The same goes for the fonts. Hovering the mouse over the fonts, should give a preview in the document so one does not have to choose font to see the result.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Just open Writer and look at GUI and my comments
2.
3.

Actual Results:

Expected Results:
See my description

Reproducible: Always

Adjusted summary.

Normally one issue per Bugzilla report please.

The Iconview of Paragraph Styles (PS) is an oversize visual representation of the styles. It is an alternative UI representation for the drop listbox of paragraph styles used elsewhere in the UI. Its organization into a 3 column 3 row scrollable gridbox was to allow it to fit on the Notebookbar Tabbed UI. The other Notebookbar flavors still use the listbox GUI. Perhaps try one of those NB options, or our Standard toolbar, menu and Sidebar UI

An actual click selection of the one of the PS "previews" will apply to a selection of paragraphs made from the document. Dynamic "reformatting" of the selection from the document would be non-performant and has been rejected when requested in the past. Likewise for dynamic preview of font assignments bug 112324. A dynamic preview of changed PS on mouseover would be non-performant and of questionable value. Actual click selection to apply a PS is our norm.

Rework of the PS icon size and positioning on the NB Tabbed UI is possible, but not clear there is any real advantage of using additional horizontal space available on the Tabbed UI's Home tab for additional PS preview icons.

A horizontal filmstrip slider, or a pop-out dialog offers more meaningful space to work with the previews.

You cannot see that the PS icon size and positioning of OnlyOffice is superior of LO? It shows more styles, it has a drop down box which can list much more styles than the small space currently allocted in LO. You have the space, why not use it.

Sorry for mixing fonts into this as well, but the harm is already done so continuing that discussion.
If dynamic preview is not used, one will have to scroll down and choose a font. If one does not like the font, one has to scroll down again and try another. Not happy? scroll again until you finally found a font you like. Very tedious when making e.g. a birthday invitation and you want different fonts.

I tend to agree with the desire to maximize scrolling content (in general). However, is it really beneficial to _see_ paragraph style? I mean you insert a heading as a structural attribute not a visual eyecatcher. How about replacing this visual multi-preview control with a plain dropdown?
