Description vohe 2011-02-19 10:01:37 UTC
Hello,

assume I want to open a document with LibreOffice. For example a GIF-File.

So i start LibreOffice, follow the menue File - Open and choose Filetype.
Then i see a list of possible filetypes.
Scrolling down this list i find ODF - Drawing, DXF, EMF, EPS, ..., SVG, ..., WMF.
Till this the list seems to be sortet. So - no GIF is there?!
But if i go on scrolling down i see : BMP, GIF,..., XPM.
Hmm - another sorted list of filetypes. And at the end PCD files follow.

This is the same with other fileformats like textdocuments.

Furthermore the list of fileformats is interrupted by ------- lines. This seems to be a grouping of filetyps (text, drawing, presentation...)
Is it possible to name this lines?
And overall is it possible to sort the whole list?
May it would be better do find unique format for each line.
NOT: ODF Textdocument (*.odt)
     Openoffice.org 1.0 drawing (*.sxd)
     GIF - Grafics Interchange Format (*.gif)

BUT: ---- Text Formats ----
     ODF Textdocument (*.odt)
     ---- Grafic Formats ----
     Grafics Interchange Format (*.gif)
     Openoffice.org 1.0 drawing (*.sxd)

as sorted list.

Overall keep in mind, that e.g. Windows normally doesn't show any file extensions.
So if one folder hold files like MyGrafik.BMP, MyGrafik.GIF, MyGrafik.JPG, MyGrafik.PCD, MyGrafik.ODG, MyGrafik.ODT,... it's all the same in the file Opendialog. Then it is necessary to find the format in the filetype list quickly.

I hope you understand my broken english. And can comprehend what i mean?

greetings
Volker

In addition. May be better use that format

(*.gif) Graphics Interchange Format

rather than

Graphics Interchange Format (*.gif)

It will be faster to find filetype.
Not everyone knew that GIF is Graphics Interchange Format, but everyone knew that GIF is GIF.

May be this format should be optional.

In 3.3.1 RC2 I seen you have delete extensions from the list. WHY?

Now list is very long and doesn't fit into one screen. May be someone have idea what to do?

@vohe:
Unfortunately I have some problems to understand your needs.
May be hints on <http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport> can help you to report your problem more clearly??
Then please:
- Attach screenshots with comments (you can add information using LibO DRAW
  and then attach your screenshot with comments as PDF)
- Attach a sample document
- Contribute a step by step instruction containing every key press and every
  mouse click how to reproduce your problem
- add information
  -- what exactly is unexpected
  -- and why do you believe it's unexpected
  -- what exactly differs in LibO file dialogs to dialogs of other software
     (gimp, Irfan View, ...)
  -- everything else crossing your mind after you read a.m. URL

Hi,

i don't get a email-reminder (at 2011-02-20 00:15:24 or 2011-03-01 21:32:56) but today i recieve an email (Björn Michaelsen 2011-12-22 05) of this thread.

@Rainer and *

What's so hard to understand?
under Windows:

Store a File on your Computer (e.g. a *.pptx Presentation)
 - Start Libre- (Open-)Office.
 - Select File - Open , the File-Open Dialog appears.
 - now you want to see only *.pptx. To do this you open the filetype listbox in the file open dialog.
 - normaly you will select the pptx entry there. But where is it? Not there. You have to know that the *.pptx filetype is "Microsoft Powerpoint ..." format.

There is no kind of sort in the listbox.
How it could be? See (e.g.) xnview you can download that under: http://www.xnview.com/en/download.html

Second thing:
In my german Libreoffice version there is a filetype called:

Openoffice.org 1.0 HTML-Dokumentvorlage(*

yes! Thats what i can read in the filetype-listbox (under windows xp/vista/7)

What kind of fileextention could this mean?

@vohe:
You want to say "Filetype pptx missing in menu 'File -> open -> file type selector'?
NOT reproducible with "LibreOffice 3.4.5 RC1 - WIN7 Home Premium (64bit) German UI [Build ID: OOO340m1 (Build:501)]" in LibO file dialogs.

Please try a more current version!

Do you use LibO or OS file dialogs (Menu 'tools -> Options -> LibO -> General')?

For your enhancement requests please submit separate reports.

@Rainer
Did you read what i wrote? And did you do what i say?

>> Do you use LibO or OS file dialogs (Menu 'tools -> Options -> LibO ->
>> General')?

It doesn't matter which version of dialogs you use, the filetype listbox shows the same (chaos) in both variants.

happy easter!

Same problem as in "Bug 41000 - FILEOPEN - Filter Selection dialog needs structure and preselection", I make this one a DUP because other one has more progress.

@reporter:
Please watch proceeding in Bug 41000 and feel free to reopen this one or a new bug if result after fix will not be satisfying.
