Document with web images that exibits intermittent problems.

Beginning with LibreOffice 3.5.0, if the contents of a web site that includes images are copied into a LibreOffice Writer document, there is an intermittent problem loading the images. Approximately 25% of the time the images won't load. Sometimes closing and reopening the document fixes the problem, but not always. The problem has been confirmed on LibreOffice 3.5.0 and 3.5.1 on both Windows XP and Windows Vista. Downgrading to LibreOffice 3.4.x always solves the problem. The test computers are not behind a proxy.

Attached is a sample LibreOffice document with images that intermittently won't load.

NOT reproducible with "LibreOffice 3.5.1.2 German UI/Locale [Build-ID: dc9775d-05ecbee-0851ad3-1586698-727bf66] on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit) and various other versions. Opened reporter's sample several times with double click from explorer - no problem

Modified Version due to report.

Might be related to "Bug 45298 - VIEWING Picture linked from WEB impossible, only placeholder shown"

@reporter:
Thank you for your report – unfortunately important information is missing.
May be hints on <http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport> will help you to find out what information will be useful to reproduce your problem? If you believe that that is really sophisticated please as for Help on a user mailing list
Please:
- Write a meaningful Summary describing exactly what the problem is
- Attach a sample document (not only screenshot)
- Attach screenshots with comments if you believe that that might explain the
problem better than a text comment. Best way is to insert your screenshots
into a DRAW document and to add comments that explain what you want to show
- Contribute a step by step instruction containing every key press and every
mouse click how to reproduce your problem (due to example in Bug 43431)
– if possible contribute an instruction how to create a sample document
  from the scratch
- add information
  -- concerning your PC
-- concerning your OS (Version, Distribution, Language)
-- concerning your LibO localization (UI language, Locale setting)
–- Libo settings that might be related to your problems
-- how you launch LibO and how you opened the sample document
–- If you can contribute an OOo Issue that might be useful
-- everything else crossing your mind after you read linked texts
Even if you can not provide all demanded information, every little new information might bring the breakthrough.
May be you can test <https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/bug/> for submitting bug reports?

After reading over the comments to bug 45298, it does seem to describe the same problem. I am not certain how the profile could be related to this problem, but that might explain the intermittent nature of the issue.

It does seem that when it works, it works consistently for several hours and when it fails, it fails consistently for several hours. Rebooting the computer doesn't help, but perhaps there is something in the profile that gets reset periodically which temporarially solves the issue.

I discovered this problem because my wife frequently copies data from websites (using Firefox on Windows XP) to Writer to better format it for printing. She has used LibreOffice since 3.x and has never had an issue. After upgrading to 3.5.0 (and later 3.5.1.2) she cannot go more than one day without experiencing problems. Downgrading to 3.4.x causes the issue to disappear.

The next time she is experiencing issues (and I am around) I will snag a wireshark dump to see if there are any clues.

I have an additional piece of information.

When the pictures succeed in loading the following occurs.

1. The document loads with placeholders for each picture displaying the URL for each picture.
2. The URL is replaced by the text "Read-Error."
3. The picture loads and covers the text.

When the pictures fail to load, the process never passes the first step. The URL continues to be displayed. "Read-Error" is never shown on the screen.

This is the opposite of how I would have expected it to behave. I do not know enough about the internal logic of LibreOffice, but I would imagine that this would narrow the range of code that is failing.

I am still working on getting a wireshark capture.

I am no longer having this problem in LibreOffice 3.5.4.
Comment 5 Rainer Bielefeld Retired 2012-06-18 21:16:42 UTC
I can confirm that 3.5.5.1 does not show any picture problem with reporter's sample document, but same positive result with 3.5.0RC2 and 3.5.1. So I doubt that that progress has anything to do with a LibO Fix

The problem also vanished for "Bug 45298 - VIEWING Picture linked from WEB impossible, only placeholder shown", also even for the version used for report. Seems to be some progress in WWW ;-)
