Problem description: Steps to reproduce: 1. open for editing or create a new ODF document 2. type lines of text in new document, do nothing for existing document 3. select view/non-printing characters OR ctrl F10 OR view non-printing characters icon button on tool bar Current behavior: icon button is 'depressed' (active) but no display of non-print characters Expected behavior: icon button is 'depressed' (active) and non-print characters displayed Platform (if different from the browser): Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0
OK, now I see this is caused by Writer/Tools/Options/Writer/Formatting Aids needing to have the non-default non-printing characters ticked. I picked this up from reported Bug 42079 see below: Borut Cadez stated: I can confirm Nonprinting characters are not shown in OSX version of Writer 3.5.1.2 and seems that they are not working. The issue is that by default all nonprinting characters except Hidden Text are disabled in preferences/writer/Formating Aids. Perhaps it would be better to enable spaces, tabs, breaks by default.
Works fine on Windows 3.5.5. Is it solved for you? Please reopen the bug with further instructions if not. Thanks.

Yes, it's been OK since I changed Tools/Options/Formatting Aids and selected all the non-print characters. I don't know whether these are now enabled by default in a fresh LO installation (this was the solution suggested by Borut Cadez), or whether my settings of these on the previous installation were "remembered" when the new version was installed, in which case the problem is not really solved for those new LO users who are used to the MS products where you don't have to edit the options in order to get at least some non-print characters displaying after selecting the non-print display button. Thanks Brian
Please don't change version number which indicates the first version in which the bug has been observed.
