thank you for your bug report, I can reproduce this bug running libreoffice Version: 4.1.0.0.beta1
Build ID: 3a2c2d2417101e45fe07cfd8358acf2204a98f3 on Mac osx 10.8.3 

the file doesn't open the problem just stops and Apple chrash report comes up.

Not sure if this will be useful, but...

Ok, I couldn't open it with 3.5.7, 3.6.6 nor 4.0.3. I could effectively open it with MS Word 2007. Saving it as ODT and DOCX produced files which were easily opened. Modifying the original DOC with MS Word and resaving it as DOC, produced a file that didn't crash LibO either.
