Problem description: using any of the subject formatting tools causes the application to collapse

Steps to reproduce:
1. ....create a document
2. ....use any of the aforementioned tools
3. ....program disappears

Current behavior:  following the program disappearing as stated above, restarting the application starts the recovery process

Expected behavior:  we expect the dialogue of the selected tool to appear and allow formatting changes to be made.
