Description Ljiljan 2013-07-25 05:45:44 UTC
Problem description:

When I send e-mail to someone from gmail that contains PPT presentation saved from LibreOffice, Gmail (Google Docs) does not generate preview, which is pretty usefull when you don't want to download it, but just to preview in browser.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create presentation in Impress and save it in PPT
2. Sent it via g-mail account
3. Open the message and click Preview
4. Google Docs will write that it could not generate preview, but it could if presentation is not saved from Impress

Current behavior:

Google Doc cannot open presentation saved in PPT from Impress. My personal opinion is that Google Doc has pretty good compactability with MS Office, so I assume that error appears while exporting to PPT from Impress.

Expected behavior:

File in PPT from Impress is saved in a way it allows other applications (such as Google Doc) to open it.

Operating System: Ubuntu
Version: 4.0.4.2 release

Please attach sample PPT file to test. Have you tried opening that file with PowerPoint Viewer to check whether it's not an LO bug?

Well, any presentation created in Impress could not be opened in Google Docs.

Not to be misunderstood, Power Point can open those presentation with no mistakes... perfectly good. However, Google Docs does not want to generate preview, but it generate previews if file is created in Microsoft Project.

It could be up to Google Docs/ Gmail but I thought maybe some information is not saved from Impress that is expected by Google Docs...

Emm..I don't know if related, please see Bug 61159. Did you install LO from PPA?
Comment 5 Joel Madero 2013-08-06 21:03:33 UTC
Attached is a ppt that I created, attached to google docs and was able to preview just fine.

LibreOffice 4.2 master & LibreOffice 4.1
Bodhi Linux

Please make sure you save as a ppt not odp as odp's cannot be previewed by Google Docs (perhaps an enhancement request for Google)

If you are able to preview the attached powerpoint presentation then it's something about your setup or your files - please attach a file that doesn't work for you if it's still an issue. again, make sure it's a ppt file (not odp which is default)

I can preview your presentation, but take a look at my... created with LibreOffice 4.0.4... it does not generate preview...

What happens now: Google says it cannot generate preview, and that I can download oroginal file or use simple HTML... If I wait for a while, simple HTML will open automatically...

If you cannot open this presentation, I would ask you to change status again.. at least for the LO 4.0.4...

Well there is an issue with the particular document for sure but we need reproducible steps with a blank document that someone else can confirm.

For now marking as UNCONFIRMED to see if someone else can reproduce.

With the test case that you provided I opened with 4.1, resaved as a different name and still no preview allowed. So I agree with this document something strange is going on but that's not enough to mark as NEW

Every document created in LibreOffice 4.0.4 on my computer (even if you edit and save it in Microsoft Power Point later) cannot be previewed in Google Docs. I guess people don't care if they cannot preview PPT document in Google (after all, you can download it and open it), but I find it very useful.

It's definitely something about your setup that is causing the problem. I just purged libreoffice 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 completely - installed 4.0.4 and did a test case that worked fine.

Marking as WFM

Some hints for you to diagnose on your environment:

1. Try on a live boot of Ubuntu - this guarantees default everything

2. reset your profile: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile

3. If you installed libreoffice in any other way other than the official repositories and/or ppa please purge it completely and stick with the official repos/ppa's (ie. don't download from libreoffice.org)

4. Try 4.1.0 which is currently out

Thanks... Now it works... I was using 3.6 at Ubunutu 12.10, and after Update to Ubuntu 13.04, I started to use LibreOffice 4.0, but continue to use the same template I created in previous version of LibreOffice. Probably problem exist in that previous version, because my template was create in Libre Office for sure...

Anyway, not it works, so I will mark it as NOTABUG.
