Still in LO 5.1+, no option to print grid in Draw.
From the UI perspective the option would go into the print dialog at the options tab. But isn't the inbuilt grid just a visual helper? Why not use a background fill style or a couple of lines (at best on a separate layer) when you want to have a printable grid. Sounds like a cleaner solution to me.
The idea was to not recreate a grid in another layer. Yes the option should be in print dialog. Consider this as a new feature request, I admit this may not be needed by the majority of users but can help some.
I have been waiting for this feature for years, and at this point it is the *only* thing that forces me to abandon Draw and use other drawing tools. Draw is actually quite adept at quick technical drawings, which I do frequently (and I believe many others do as well). Unfortunately, the scale that is used in any given technical document needs to be explicit *and* visible as represented by a reference grid. At the moment that is difficult to do in Draw, the only way is to draw a grid of lines exactly over the grid. However, as soon as you do that these lines are constantly in your way as you attempt to manipulate the drawing, being selected when you don't want them to be selected, etc. Plus, if one decides to change the scaling in a drawing that grid of lines needs to be deleted and a different grid again drawn in its place. Please consider this a near-term feature request. I would propose a very simple implementation consisting of a checkbox to turn it on/off, a color selector to set the color of the gridlines, and a transparency setting to determine their transparency. Drawing your own grid needs only a few clicks. Draw a vertical line at the left edge, then Edit > Duplicate. Draw a horizontal line at the top edge, then Edit > Duplicate. Don't forget to use a separate layer for your grid, so you can easily protect and hide them if needed. Having full control about thickness, color and style is an advantage for me. As far as I know, at least in Germany technical drawings to not need a grid but measure lines.
Would it be a good idea to have a tool/extension/dialog to automatically create such a grid collection (formerly known as 'layer')? Could be an EASYHACKEXTENSION.
We discussed the topic in the design meeting. While it sounds reasonable that sometimes you want to print the grid it's a helper functions and can become complex: thickness, straightness, color etc. might need to be configurable. See also bug 130995. We could alternatively ship a couple of templates with grids on a layer that illustrate how the customization is done. An example would be bug 131418.
