Currently it seems like there is no way to set a default bullet style, making it so that if a user always prefers a specific bullet style (including relevant options such as tab/space in "positions" tab or the number of inches for a tab) they must manually set it every single time. A user can make a new template but this really doesn't solve the problem where they want it so every time they push "outline" or "bullet" buttons they get a very specific set of options and look/behavior. Marking as: Enhancement High -- because I think outlinining is common and that unless a user loves what LibreOffice devs have by default forced upon them, they must always manually adjust, even within a single document if you have different sections of outlines they won't stick with the same style, you must change each outline section to fit your needs/preferences.

Hey Cor, How would this work in terms of really quick access via the bullet and number button? I think that's the main issue that the fastest way to access bullets, outlinining and numbering is through the button(s) on the toolbar but this is always the default, so additional steps requiring you to go through styles is just more work if you know you always like the same outline style and want to access this by just clicking a button. still a valid request in 5.4 alpha. Although we have numbering styles, and although you customize Numbering 1 style, that customization is not what you get when you toggle numbered list (F12). Observation 1: However, Numbering 1 IS the style assigned - it is highlighted in the styles and formatting window. Observation 2: Double clicking on Numbered 1 list style changes the style to its customized values. Observation 3: Toggle Bulleted List also assigned the style "Numbered 1" instead of List 1.
Totally agree with the idea. When preparing the general template for use on multiple computers, I should be able to customize default numbering/bullet style used, when numbering/bullets button is used or LO detects automatic numbering aplicable. This should not need F11/styles use.

I agree that a way is needed to change the default numbering (especially the settings under the position tab) so that when the Numbering button is clicked, the style that is applied is what the user wants, not the one defined in the original LO system. This should be true for any new document, not just confined to one current document. Thanks for your consideration.

I agree. I think this request to allow the user to set the default of what type of bullet and Spacing occurs when the Bullet button on the tool-bar is clicked is very important. LibreOffice is a full feature word processor. But it is quite intimidating when a user just wants a SIMPLE interface. For example: many users I know just want one simple bullet that they can access from the toolbar without going into any complicated styles. It seems that this request has been on the books for a few years now. Any progress?

(I looked at their website and did not find option) Novice users might find it much easier to start with by just using the Toolbar bullet button rather then more complicated styles. Especially when all they wants is a simple single bullet (with their spacing) - rather then the default settings. Personally, I think if LibreOffice (which is full of great features) was easier for novice users - more people would use it.

The Toolbar buttons are split-buttons. There are 8 predefined bullet styles and 8 predefined numbering styles. The 'More Bullets' or 'More Numbering' buttons launch dialog to customize bullets and numbering, but only for the current document only. These direct formatting changes are easily done, and appropriate for "Novice" users. I would like to be able to set the default in the "position" dialogue. I have a setting that I often use, which is different than the current default. If I could reset the default, and then, for each time I have a numbered list, I can just click on the number button in the Formatting toolbar, and there is the style and position I want. That way it would be much easier to get a consistent layout on our documents. In addition, it would be nice if the list styles could have a "list parent", just like "Text Body" and other paragraph styles have "Default paragraph style" as a parent. I for one would like the ability to set position and tab stops for all of the list styles at once.
