Description chdiza 2014-05-08 05:42:02 UTC
Problem description: I was surprised to discover that some of my ~40K ods spreadsheets suddenly became twice as large in file size. The reason is that LibreOffice started saving a .png file that is the preview icon of the document inside that very document. Suppose I have foo.ods. This is just a zip archive really, and in some recent version of LIbreOffice it started containing "thumbnail.png". The bug is that there appears to be no way for a user to TURN OFF the saving of a thumbnail. I don't want my files to increase in size for some "feature" I don't want. In this case my files doubled in size. If the original document were smaller, it would have quadrupled or tripled, at least.

Please make a checkmark in preferences somewhere to disable this (I don't care if the icons in the Startcenter are just white rectangles). Or, start storing the thumbnails inside ~/Library/Preferences/Application Support/LibreOffice. Or, if there already is a way to turn this off, please put it in the docs (I looked and couldn't find it).

I should note that what seems to have happened recently is that the size of the "thumbnail.png" has drastically increased in some recent version of LibreOffice. I found year-old spreadsheets with 20K thumbnails inside them. Newly created spreadsheets with the same data in them have at least 65K thumbnails.

E.g., I opened a 40K spreadsheet that was about 5 months old. I changed a cell, hit undo, saved. The file size was suddenly 85K. This is traceable 100% to a thumbnail that went from around 20K to 65K. But none of the cells changed!

This is absurd. Please return the filesize of the embedded thumbnails to around 20K or less. There is no need for a high-res thumbnail.

Requesting UX advice on this one. Removing PossibleRegression - it is not a regression. A new feature was added and you are asking for yet another option.

UX Team - Thoughts on this one? Another option needed?
