Description Tom Williams 2015-02-24 16:06:59 UTC
I was sent a MS Word 2007/2010 document and some of the text isn't properly formatted. It appears spaces are used to help format the text and LibreOffice Writer doesn't display this text properly.

Expected results: Writer display the text the same as MS Word 2007.

Actual results: Writer displays the text in a misformatted fashion.

Attached are screen shots of MS Word 2007 and LibreOffice 4.4.0 on Windows XP displaying the same document.

Note: When I first loaded the document in Writer, some of the text didn't appear at all and there were blank gaps embedded in the text. Somehow, that behavior corrected itself and all the text _does_ appear, even though some is misformatted.

Test document

This is a test document, which was taken from the original document. The text, in this document, is of a religious nature.

I just viewed the test document in Writer 5.3.3 (64-bit) on Windows 7 and the document displays the same as shown in the attached screen shot of Writer 4.4.0 on Windows XP. Some of the text isn't formatted correctly. On the same system, I opened the test Word document in MS Word 2010 starter edition and the text was formatted as expected, as shown in the screen shot of MS Word 2007 on Windows XP.

Thanks!

Test document - compare MSO and LO

Bugzilla is "issue based", so a single issue must be pointed at and narrowed down, after a search for not being a duplicate.
Bugzilla is not "document based", like "this document doesn't display nice". So minimal test must be created.
And than, this document is awfully formatted, without basics in text formatting.
So, it was wrong even to confirm it like this.

What I assume is that problem is on image attached. Then it's about margin or paragraph width difference between MSO and LO. I can't say the reason, all looks the same. Also not sure whether it's related to Verdana font.
What we can conclude is that's 0,1cm difference. If we increase in LO, it's the same then.

Added similar Bug 94801 with Arial font to See Also, and also opposite issue with TNR font Bug 62422.

I just viewed the test document, attached to this bug report, in LibreOffice Writer 6.1.0 (32-bit) on Windows 7 (32-bit) and the text appears the same as shown in the "LibreOffice Writer 4.4.0" screenshot.

Given the poor formatting used in the original document, I'm fine with closing this bug report. It's not that big of a deal, in the grand scheme of things. :)

In 6.5+:
NOK: "for this is he who was spoken of the prophet Isaiah, saying:",
OK: the transgression, for making an end to sin, to make atonement

I'll change the title to try to point to 1st issue with tab and space.

This is not at all related to TabOverMargin (as might be suggested by some of the see-also bugs).

So, I tried this in Writer 7.5.3.2 on Linux and the formatting looked much better! So, I'll close this out as "worksforme". :)
