Collapsing the sidebar hides toolbar buttons contained at its top without indicating to the user they are now behind the section selector on the right. This could be solved by wrapping them or displaying an indicator icon when buttons are hidden.

Had to read this several times before I realized what your valid concern was. If you resize the Sidebar Deck, shrinking it, various buttons on the content panels slide out of view. And, there is no visual indicator that the button widgets are hidden. Most noticeable on the Navigator panels. Optionally, for some content panels, it might be preferred to allow the button widgets to shift attachment (or rescale) to fit available width of a resized deck. Have adjusted summary and set as enhancement.
Heiko mentions the same thing in bug 92317, "Alternative solutions are wrapping controls or to show a chevron like at the toolbar.", and this same topic was being discussed at the design meeting, though no conclusion was reached.
I believe we can now close this as "works for me" as resizing a deck will not allow "sliding" content out of view anymore. Situation progressively improved over time, e.g. I was still able to make icons disappear in the Styles deck in 6.0, but not anymore in 7.5.
