When selecting an area of text, whether by mouse, keyboard, or select all, the selection highlighting does not appear, or if it does appear no changes can be made (i.e. font change). At times the text within the selected area becomes scrambled. I did change the interface color, specifically document background to a light blue. This normally does not interfere with the selection area. And, this problem did not occur until 5.2.0.4 release. (Used 5.1.5.2 release, prior)
Which Linux distribution/version you are using? Does this weird selection behavior happen each time? (in some way) Can you check step no. 3 from [1]? [1] https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps
I am on Ubuntu 16.04, 64-bit and on the latest version of Fresh (5.2.1.2) UI Render is on default, not OpenGL. The problem persists, and when the selection bug happens, the Options window (or any dialog box) is blank. I did notice today that when I selected ALL and changed the font for the document, this triggered the bug.
I think this might be the same as bug 99927. See my comment there: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99927#c3 That bug is actually a bit older, so it might be different, but the symptoms seem really similar. That one is triggered by changing fonts, too. The selection area becoming scrambled seems to be a difference, but it might just be a symptom occuring under certain conditions. Do you notice any particular significant differences between the symptoms in the two reports?

My apologies for the major delay in responding. I'm new to the bug reporting process and just realized I needed to respond to your question. The significant difference is that the document becomes completely unresponsive and I have to force quit. This morning I had an added symptom of the first two paragraphs of text turning to gibberish when I installed new fonts.
(In reply to Anne McDonald from comment #4) > The significant difference is that the document becomes completely > unresponsive and I have to force quit. That doesn't sound at all different from bug 99927's description "My Office hangs and does not respond". The reporter of bug 99927 already saw it in 5.0.3, though..
Can you please retest with the latest 5.2.4.2 or 5.3.0.1 (RC) releases? Bug 99927 doesn't occur anymore, we can see now if they're related.

The problem persisted in 5.3.4.2 using Ubuntu 16.04 Unity. For other reasons, this week I switched to Ubuntu 16.04 MATE, same version of LibreOffice and the problem appears to be resolved.

There was a class of Ubuntu-related selection bugs: bug 104244 and bug 108453. They were solved in Ubuntu 17.04. Maybe this is somehow of the same genre. I think we should switch the status to worksforme now.
