Once you set a background image using "Slide > Set background image" then go to "Slide > Slide properties > Background" and uncheck "AutoFit" and check "Relative", what is it relative to? Certainly not the original image. It seems that what its relative to is the slide's dimension's, not the image's original dimensions. Ok, that's fine, but in that case there should be an option to let the image keep its proportions, because if the user wants to scale the image to 50% of the slide's height then they have no idea what to set the width to. The image does not keep its proportions and so becomes distorted. Try it for yourself. Width=50% Height=50% https://i.imgur.com/W5cB0Xp.png Width=100% Height=50% https://i.imgur.com/5SJrIll.png Both are distorted.
Thank you for reporting the bug. Unfortunately without clear steps to reproduce it, we cannot track down the origin of the problem. Please provide a clearer set of step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce the problem. I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' once the requested information is provided. Where can you find the "AutoFit" option. A screenshot would be useful.
1. Set a background image using "Slide > Set background image" 2. Go to "Slide > Slide properties > Background" 3. Uncheck "AutoFit" 4. Check "Relative" 5. Set Height=50% You want the background image to keep its width:height proportions but LibreOffice doesn't let you do that.
This dialog does no longer exist in current versions (5.3.7 and 5.4.3). The current workflow is to first import the image and then set the kind of filling. The current versions have an item "Custom", where you can select a percent value and a check box "Scale" to decide, whether the value is relative to the slide size or relative to the image size. But the dialog has no options, to easily get the percent value, which is needed to scale the image with keeping ration to height or width. Therefore I set this to enhancement request.
Original proposal was published at https://design.blog.documentfoundation.org/2015/12/22/area-fill-options-made-consistent/. Don't think there is further input from UX needed.
