This Bug is still there with LibreOffice 3.6.4.3 (Build ID: 2ef5aff) and it seems this is a difference once as 53909.

This ins't true. The test file of this bug 58071 is a .dot file that opens correctly in LO 3.6.4.3 on MAC OS X 10.6.8.

I hijack this one for the problem that particular .dot (may be all?) are not recognized as .dot by LibO. You can open the documents with selected filetype .dot (MSO97), but double click in file expolorer will not work, and open from recent documents also shows strange texts like "ÐÏ#ࡱ#á################>###þÿ" instead of expected contents.

Steps how to reproduce
0. downloae sample document, create a copy in WIN file explorer and rename copy
   to "copy.txt"
1. Launch LibO
2. Open new blank text document from Start center
3. Open sample document and "copy.txt" from menu 'File -> open' without selecting
   file type in selector.
   Expeted: "copy.txt" fails "somehow" and sample document "Ordbrei_Leitz1.dot"
             opens with table view (as it does with LibO 3.3.3)
   Actual: Useless strings shown (see above).

Document will open fine if you select file type "MSO97 - .dot" in Dialog file type selector in step 3, what is a workaround, but not a solution.

Already [Reproducible] with Server Installation of "LibreOffice 3.6.5.2 " German UI/ German Locale [Build-ID: 5b93205] {pull date 2013-01-18} on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)

Still worked fine with
* Server Installation of "LibreOffice 3.6.2.1 rc English UI/ German Locale [Build-ID: ba822cc] on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)
* server installation of "LibreOffice 3.5.7.2 rc German UI/Locale [Build-ID: 3215f89-f603614-ab984f2-7348103-1225a5b] on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)

Also reproducible with
* Attachment 74244 [details] for Bug 51930
* Attachment 58225 [details] for Bug 47138

@Michael Velten:
What the heck are "character chars"? ;-) Your description was much too imprecise.
Is the bug I describe your one?

@declan_moriarty
For what EXACT test results did you mark this one as WFM? did you select fily type or does that work with MAC without file type selection?

@Caolán:
This one seems a (very) little similar to "Bug 57532 - FILEOPEN particular .doc (MSO97) fails with error message"? Please set Status to ASSIGNED and add yourself to "Assigned To" if you accept this Bug or forward the Bug if it's not your turf

Unfortunately this "copy.txt" only is a piece of juggling proving not very much. But opening it with EditPad Lite or with LibO as Encoded Text (West European Iso-8859-1) looks very similar to the result I saw yesterday.

And strange: Today it works for me when I open "Ordbrei_Leitz1.dot" from file dialog (without selecting filetype) document opens with Table view. But problem persists when I open the document from WIN file explorer by double click.

Clicking on the example file downloaded to the "Downloads" folder in finder opens the .dot file in LibreOffice which displays as a series of lines in a Writer Document. I didn't have to go into the LibreOffice Open file dialogue to open this file, I just opened it form finder (like opening it from explorer from windows).

this can be reproduced on Linux by running soffice with the
--writer parameter (but apparently not without that):

 soffice --writer Ordbrei_Leitz1.dot

it was fixed for 4.0 by this commit:

commit 94001499e0d7453c7012241334a9911dfccef76b
