Description Mike Kaganski 2014-04-11 16:05:03 UTC
Sometimes the standards, esp. govt, require that the table in text documents continued on next page be prepended by a text like "Continued" (in addition to repeating header rows). Currently this is entirely not supported.

If this feature could be implemented, then the following could be a starting list of requirements:
1. There should be possible to specify such text for all pages except last, and separately for last part of table (e.g., in Russia, the requirement is that all parts except last have subtitle "Continued", while last should have subtitle "Ended").
2. There should be possible to include fields into the text, because it may be required to mention the table name in the text: like "Table 1.1 - Continued". If "1.1" is a numeration field, then there should exist a way to put it into those texts.

Of course, there could exist some other requirements in other cultures I don't know of.

Big Thankyous to all those participating in LO development!

Thanks. I agree, this is a worthwhile request. This feature does not exist in MS Office either AFAIK, so there may be interoperability issues. It may relate to the caption (generally set above a table) being modified if repeated, although I suppose an alternate implementation may simplify this (in relation to indexes only needing to pull in one entry). An example is given in this Indian TeX group presentation on longtable:

http://www.tug.org.in/tutorial/chap07-scr.pdf

Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) 16th Ed. ยง3.85 specifies this use of indicating when a table is continued and gives a basic example in Figure 3.25. Cambridge (Butcher's Copyediting) mentions this feature (briefly). Oxford Guide to Style (2002) states: "Insert a 'continued' line, such as 'Table 2 cont.', only if the table turns over to a verso page, not if it extends over facing pages." Obviously there are (as also originally pointed out) several variations, but even a basic facility would be useful.

Status set to NEW.
