As a user I expect that the aspect ratio of an image is kept intact if the corresponding checkbox "Keep aspect ratio" is set, no matter *when* it was set. To reproduce: 1. Open a new text file. 2. Insert an image or photo into the page 3. Double-click on image to open image properties dialog 4. Ensure the "Keep aspect ratio" checkbox is off. 4. Choose a width of e.g. 20% (relative to text area) 5. *Then* check the "Keep aspect ratio" checkbox 6. Click OK Expected result: - Since the checkbox was checked when OK was clicked, the image should be scaled proportionally Actual result: - Since the checkbox was unchecked in the moment when the new size was *entered*, it did not scale the image proportionally when the dialog was closed. I propose that as soon as the "Keep aspect ratio" checkbox is set, the aspect ratio is forced back to the image ratio the photo had when the dialog was opened, by honouring either the width or height parameter, whatever was changed last. This would be a behaviour consistent with several image processing applications I use. (Side node: It would be nice if there were a possibility to restore the photos original aspect ratio at any time, but this would go as another feature request.) Operating System: Windows 7 Version: 4.3.0.1 rc
Hi I reproduce on windows 7/64 The proposed functioning seems good to me... I set status to New (In reply to comment #0) > (Side node: It would be nice if there were a possibility to restore the > photos original aspect ratio at any time Yes... It is at least possible to restore the original size, then check the option to keep the ratio, then change the dimensions... not direct so. Images are now (Version: 4.3) scaled proportionally by default (mouse). The dialogue will be less useful for this ? Regards Pierre-Yves

In my opinion, this is a "won't fix". The "keep aspect ratio" option can be used to "lock" the width and height values together when they are changed, and some users will want to have that setting on _with an aspect ratio different from the original_. The order matters, and it is not difficult to first turn the setting on, before changing any value. (Or undo unwanted changes) UX team, would you agree?
I can follow the discomfort in switching the option on after some changes have been done. However this is how it usually works in other programs too. And how could you know whether the one or the other parameter has changed (in order to adopt post-hoc). What we could do is to check the aspect ration checkbox by default (for images). We scale images proportionally by default when using the mouse (you have to press Shift for open aspect ratio), while the opposite is true for shapes.

We scale images proportionally by default when using the mouse (you > have to press Shift for open aspect ratio), while the opposite is true for > shapes. I think that makes sense. It would make it more similar to what MS Office does. See my comment in bug 153919#c8 This request is already in bug 125239. Heiko, do you want to close this as "won't fix" or do you want it discussed at the next UX meeting?
(In reply to Stéphane Guillou (stragu) from comment #10) > want it discussed at the next UX meeting? It's on the agenda
We discussed the topic in the design meeting. Proportional scaling is enabled for images while using the mouse and we should do the same when working with the dialog. So simply check "Keep ratio" in the Position & Size dialog by default for images.
